ParticipantIn that case we should also be asking what the best money market/savings/checking account rates are.
JES
ParticipantUnless you think rates will go down again, in which case it might be wise to lock in a ladder of CDs. Some 6 mo, 1 yr, 18 mo etc. But I’m not sure that rates will be going down…

ParticipantThat article in the UT about the home staged family sure tells the tale of how desperate things are becomming, eh? The wife even bakes cookies in the model…what a joke. Next thing you know they will have staged neighborhood BBQs and false neighbors who say hello as you walk up to the model!

ParticipantCouple questions guys:
-Navy Fed has this great rate mentioned above, but it is an 18-month ‘share certificate’ and I think you are locked in there for 18 months. How does this differ from a CD and would you rec. this as an investment? The rate seems to be the best around.
-I noticed that only local banks have been mentioned. What about GMAC bank, ING Direct or Countrywide? Some of these are online and in the past I have found that their rates are better than local banks. Many times the best rates seem to be with the online branch of the larger institution – like GMAC and Countrywide. Any advice here?
Thanks!

ParticipantJust saw the numbers yesterday and prices are dropping in many areas already. EG: Median in San Marcos is down 4.7% and the average is down 5% in Vista.

ParticipantPerry, In my experience most people don’t join the Marines for the specialized job experience or the pay and benefits, although some certainly do. Anyone thinking of joining for purely the benefits now would likely think twice after seeing the reports from Iraq. I’m sure your friend doesn’t think of himself as a hero, but others certainly do. That’s kind of how it works you know? Ask a firefighter or police officer if they think they are heros and they will say no.
Here’s the definition of hero:
A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life: soldiers and nurses who were heroes in an unpopular war.

ParticipantHere’s a simple and unappealing idea. Bathrooms are dirty everywhere I go – Barnes and Noble, restaurants etc. Seems like they are always a mess. Enter my bathroom cleaning company that comes by a few times a day and keeps them looking clean. We also erase graffitti.

ParticipantThe virtual office is a great idea, and to take it a step further I was also hoping to find a business that I could begin part time from home. I know a guy who started a technology training company from his garage at night. He tried multi-level marketing for a while, and hated it. He’s an extroverted engineer and once he got into the training gig he strated to do very well. He took it full time and does about 1 Mil a year now.
I’m encouraged when I hear other success stories out there. Some young mother in San Marcos started a company called Stroller Striders and is raking it in now. She franchised the idea, and basically all they do is set up events where mothers can meet and exercise with strollers!

ParticipantYes, you called this one! And I bet you are right. Better for Nokia to soften the blow by making it look like they will try to keep half, and perhaps they will make an effort. But in the end I bet it all shuts down except for a small group.

ParticipantI hold military personnel, firefighters, police officers etc. in higher esteem, than, for example, most lawyers or accountants. Nothing against those professions, but volunteering to put your life on the line for your job and dedicating yourself to something larger than yourself counts extra for me.
And one other reason that you should as well is because most don’t do it for the pay. I don’t know a single Marine who joined because of pay, or even for the college money. They join out of love for this country and a desire to serve. And in battle, they fight because of that as well and that’s why your idea of oursourcing the force will never work.
One guy I know went to Harvard and joined. Another had a undergrad degree from Harvard and law degree from Stanford. Do you think they joined because it was the ‘best job for the best pay”? You can make more working at Wal Mart than you can as a private in the Marines.

ParticipantMH,
Do you really think that is how this is going to play out. The government telling San Diego to go pound sand and that will be the end of it? I’m in favor of that result and then they can build the airport in the desert for all I care.
More likely IMO is that politics will come into play and a number of options will be on the table including ones we have discussed and you have slammed. I know nothing about the process involved though and have no idea who or what would be able to pressure the military to accept a joint use airport at Miramar (most likely outcome IMO).
