ParticipantObviously, we all have the option of believing or not believing. To each his or her own. Guess we’ll all find out when we take our last breath–for which there is no option.

ParticipantYes, agree, this was an unexpected outcome. Multiple streams of income do make life enjoyable.

ParticipantAgree, keeping busy with a variety of endeavors, along with other interests keeps life exciting. We’ve taken on multiple real estate, film and other projects over the years, and plan to continue to do so indefinitely. Really never plan to “retire,” as long as we find the projects interesting, and they are things we can pass along to our kids.

ParticipantIt’s great to read how so many of us on this forum are pretty much living the lives of our dreams. As scaredy alluded to–the clock is ticking–nothing any of us can do about that–other than continue to live the lives we want to live.

ParticipantAgree.
We can’t take anything with us, so might as well enjoy it all while we’re here.

ParticipantWill be interested to see if Musk moves forward with a private jet that competes with the Cirrus or Honda (vs. the electric airplane that takes off vertically, which he’s mentioned)–both of which represent the smallest private jets made–and both of which are back ordered.
Looks like the demand is there at those price points, for commercial and private use, since both are far more reasonable than most any small Cessna Citation Jet, which has long been the benchmark in that category.

ParticipantThere are lots of wonderful places to live in the world, and it sounds like you just need to find the place or places that bring you a greater sense of fulfillment, scaredy.
Maybe you could keep your present home, and visit or live elsewhere, as your careers permit, in order to test the waters, and then make a full transition later, when you find your dream location.
We find we are drawn to different locations for different reasons, and, although San Diego will always be home base, especially since all of our kids and other family are settled in CA, the experiences of living in various places at different times of the year, has definitely given us a greater sense of fulfillment.

ParticipantIt’s true that many issues don’t appear to directly affect many of us, but since we do all have the inevitable and common bond of mortality (irrespective of our net worth we all so highly value) it might be apropos to remember:
No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.John Donne
July 29, 2018 at 6:59 PM in reply to: CA Landlords. What do you plan to do if the rent control initiative passes in November? #810506flyer
ParticipantAfter 20+ years of having rentals, we’ve found that careful initial screening of all of our tenants has saved us a lot of time going forward, and then we evaluate rent increases on a case by case basis.

ParticipantWith pricing so relatively reasonable compared to other locations in San Diego, I can definitely see why you’d be considering HGV, but, based upon what you’ve mentioned regarding your commutes, imo, finding something further south might also be a consideration.
Also, even though your children are very young, you will want to think about school districts, so that’s another important consideration when deciding on a home, and here’s a great resource for that:
For young families, purchasing a home in San Diego is definitely a challenge on many fronts, so, you’ll just have to prioritize your needs/wants, and decide what makes the most sense.
Best of luck!

ParticipantSorry, flu, those items are way beyond my scope, but since you mentioned, “I’m more worried each month that I have more available funds than anticipated, I am running out of ideas of what to do with them besides sticking them into a CD. I didn’t think tech would have lasted as well as it has,” just thought I’d mention (not advise) the CRE option, but hope all goes well whatever you decide to do.

ParticipantAgree, flu. Our rentals have been performing very well, and also had the same issue concerning allocation of extra funds, so, after selling several commercial properties we had in the past, we jumped back into CRE a few years ago in different locations, which are also doing well at this point.
Wouldn’t want to recommend anything or give any advice in that regard, as there is definitely more risk involved, but just throwing the idea out there as an option.

ParticipantSounds like a great plan. We love RSF, and it will always be home base, but it’s a big world, and with so much to see and do, we’ve always enjoyed living in other locales, and will probably continue to do so as long as we live. Our kids feel the same, so it looks like they’ll be following in our footsteps.
