ParticipantI attended an Ivy for undergrad. This was the mid-1990s.
You see, there is this beautiful thing called “need based financial aid.” Because my family was poor, I graduated with only about $12K in debt. I think we had to pay about $1000-2000 per year toward expenses, as well. I did have to get a job (work-study, probably about 6-8 hrs/week) and that gave me my pocket change/spending money.
If I had gone there more recently, I would have graduated with ZERO debt, as families who make under a certain amount ($50K, I think) have to contribute zero now.
I would have no hesitation about sending my kids there (although it is far too early to know if they will have the aptitude or interest in attending), but unless our financial circumstances change for the worse, I doubt they will be receiving any need-based financial aid.

ParticipantI’ve seen this thread for a couple of years, but for the first time I actually looked on a map to see where these were. I am very surprised to learn that they are EAST of 67. My friend grew up just a few blocks away and that area is considered Lakeside.

ParticipantHmmm, I would like to sign, but I’m assuming you have to live within the city of San Diego.
In 4S Ranch we are surrounded by the city of San Diego on 3 sides, but technically we are outside the city limits. So, I don’t think I am technically eligible to sign.
I commute past the intersection of El Camino Real and Del Mar Heights on most days, so I am not too enthusiastic about the project. (Traffic!)

ParticipantI’m not sure exactly what you are looking for in terms of projects, but there is a big new commercial development going in at the eastern edge of Del Sur (on Camino Del Sur). It’s supposed to have a Target. At one point it was supposedly going to have some housing, but I’m not sure if that is still the case.

ParticipantWow, 600K or less… in Southern CA that cuts out a large portion of the market.
Also, I notice that they mention “all of Southern California”, but the locations they mention are all Ventura County, LA County, OC, and the Inland Empire. No mention of any San Diego locations.

What do you mean by the italicized statement, FIH? Do you think Hacienda Heights RE is a better value for what you get in comparison with Clairemont Mesa (SD)? I do and I also feel it is certainly a much nicer area than Clairemont and would compare its housing stock to Del Cerro or Pt Loma Woods in SD, NOT Clairemont or Mission Village.[/quote]
I have never been to Hacienda Heights and know nothing about it. However, the original poster stated that his friend’s parents bought a house for $700K and that it is now worth $900K. AFAIK, there is nothing that expensive in Clairemont Mesa (SD). Since this is true, how is this even a relevant comparison? Homes in Hacienda Heights ($700-900K) are nicer than homes in Clairemont SD ($500-600K). Yes, one would hope so!

ParticipantDel Sur is a community with lots of new/ongoing development. It is not particularly near a freeway (no freeway views or freeway noise), but it is close enough to be convenient (about 5 miles from either I-15 or SR-56). I agree that both of these freeways are pretty congested, but still do-able. San Dieguito Rd provides an alternate route to the west.
From what I understand, the land was owned by Black Mountain Ranch group for 25 years or so prior to development starting, so BG is correct about that part.
Total aside, but I have to mention it… a few days ago I remarked that the “Deer Crossing” signs on Paseo del Sur were probably a bit unnecessary at this point, given all the development in the last few years. Less than 24 hrs later, I was jogging in the area and saw deer tracks at several spots.
(Personally, I love living in 4S/Del Sur.) -
