ParticipantCooprider14,
I was joking, but it does sound like the typical justification for buying a house, doesn’t it?

ParticipantCooprider14,
I’ll buy a house today, and in four years compared to you I’ll have:
* Saved a bunch in taxes because I can write off my payments on my taxes
* Saved all that money you’re throwing away in rent
* Made money on the appreciation on the house when the market picks back up (and from the granite countertops I plan to add)
* I’ll be living in a house, and you’ll be priced out and probably have to live in your car, or move to North Dakota to afford a house
* You’re SO will have left you because you didn’t provide a
stable nest to live in with a good school districtThis is what my Realtor Suzanne told me and she’s researched it.

ParticipantAnd you forgot about nuclear winter for the realtors, contractors, granite quarry workers, commissioned furniture salespeople, big screen TV salespeople, Hummer dealers, guys that like to light their cigars with extra hundred dollar bills they got laying around, and flip (this, that, whatever) house show producers and cameramen, etc. etc. etc.

ParticipantSo if they get $1 of deposit from me, then they can loan out ten times that in loans (I don’t know what the ratio is) and make 6% on that so they would get 60c a year off each dollar I have deposited or something like that, or are my aassumptions way off?

ParticipantGosh, I didn’t realize PB had gotten to be like that in the past several years.
I remember when families would take a weekend drive down there (dad in his suit and mom in her best summer dress, the kids dressed up in their Sunday finest) to spread out a checkered tablecloth and have a picnic on or near the beach.
Usually the beaches and boardwalk were deserted early Sunday morning because everybody was at church.
I remember there were a few lost souls that somehow wandered into Pacific Beach though. I remember Willy, the town drunk. He’d get liquored up and officer Brown would laugh and lock him in the cell and Mrs. Brown would bring him some home cooked food to eat.
Ah, the good old days, seems a downright shame that Pacific Beach has recently had some growing pains. I knew things might not stay the same once ol’ reverend Smith passed, maybe church attendance has dropped? Maybe what these kids (which you so derisively refer to as ‘punks’) need is a nice wholesome hobby to get their wheels back on track, then maybe Pacific Beach could regain that charm it’s always been known for.

Have you ever thought about starting a talk radio show? You could just sit there with that formula and probably make millions.Doofrat

ParticipantI say set up a sting operation with cameras! If the landlord is coming over and walking in without notifying you, and then sneaking off, there’s a good chance are that he’s up to no good.
I saw something last week where this lady was suspicious about lights in her place being on when she got home, so she set up a clock radio camera and caught this guy coming in and putting on her underwear and lingerie.
You could set up a small camera to a laptop and hide it as well. These devices are super cheap, and you can easily set this up and remotely monitor it.
If you don’t want to go the sting route and instead notify your landlord, I would change the locks. If the landlord has a problem with this, then I would move.

ParticipantRemember too that the same person who paid $1.9 million for this house a year ago just lost this house, so I wouldn’t put too much “value” on what this person was willing to pay for the house in 06′. In addition to the ideas that Bugs presented, the buyer could have gotten caught up in a bidding war, or it could be fraud. Stop looking at it logically, buyers do some crazy stuff during periods of mania. You could almost look at this house as a parallel to the whole market and see that what somebody pays for something doesn’t mean it’s worth that.

ParticipantHey, I have an intense desire to own a new Ferrari and I have good credit, so I can get a loan at these low interest rates and “buy” one and “afford” the payments. But I douse this desire as well as the desire to own a home with the realization that this imprudent decision would affect me financially for years to come.

ParticipantI grew up in the San Pasqual area of Escondido then lived in the city proper for a few years before moving to the coast. The rural area is nice if you want land, but the commute to San Diego is a nightmare. I’ve been back to the San Pasqual area for mountainbiking and it still looks nice (not sure how the high school is though)
Like other posters have said, 92029 and 92025 are nice areas if you don’t mind the commute. What you get for the price in these zipcodes is pretty decent relatively.
As far as Escondido the city goes (and living there), the ghetto comments were right on the mark. The few (four at the most) years I lived in the city, I had my car broken into at least six times. I finally left the doors unlocked so they wouldn’t break the window anymore. Gangbangers, meth heads, lowlifes, oh, and the California Center for the Arts. I don’t even like driving through the city anymore and try to avoid it.
The important thing is that this city hasn’t always been like this, it has gotten considerably worse over the last 20 years. My guess is that it hasn’t reached bottom yet, I’d stay away.Doofrat
