I have to admit, escoguy….
It is so fvcking awesome you Uber drive…. Most of the people who you pick up don’t even know how well off you are.I swear, you should consider doing a “Cash Cab” like game show.
Can I trade free DIY auto repair/service with free rides to the airport?? :)
My wife thinks I’m crazy to Uber in a Model S, but passengers do get kicks out of it.
A dad took a selfie with his son in front of the car Sunday, they were so excited.
Another guy did a video call with his son in Cozumel to show the car.One can learn a lot from passengers, they share so much about their lives and probably 95% are great. Occasionally, a few can be a touch pretentious.
I’d like to think it helps me refine my people skills and keeps me grounded.
Have to admit, after not being out there during the pandemic, it’s nice to be out driving again and seeing the vibe of San Diego, really so much to do here.Oddly, I’ve managed to get to know a few neighbors this way, within half an hour had a family of Russian refugees coming from TJ, then a group coming from a wedding in Rancho Santa Fe. Kind of wakes you up to what is going on around us.
As far as money, no I don’t bring that up, if so in indirect terms about appreciating things in life. Some people need a little direction and really listen. It’s odd but one can have an impact in unexpected places.
Awesome. What are my chances of Ubering in a Miata?
I can give a lot of directions in life too…
Late apex, trail braking, rev matching…
Oh wait, I can only take one passenger, 6’2″ or under, comfortably….
But wait a minute….
…”Honey, I need a 2+2 seat 911s for my Uber business…”
That might work…Can you select how many passengers you can take?

At least you don’t deal w/ extreme heat and lots of walls in your house
My feedback says I deal with extreme heat very well … but the walls apparently don’t have very good sound insulation… Damn cheap Carmel valley houses. Oh well, my neighbors problem, not mine.
But it does raise an interesting point that money cant buy everything…for example, if you’re in a remote place like RSF with no neighbor nearby. It’s like the old riddle. If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around, does it make a sound?

CoronitaParticipant
Love it. Seem like good choices to me + a “must have” is living near the beach for us whether it’s here or in HI, etc.
Well, then, I guess that’s where you and I sort of differ.
You see, though one could say I probably had a silver spoon. I never feel I “need” any fancy smancy material good that only 1% can obtain in order to feel good about myself… I feel good about myself already knowing pretty much I’d I wanted something, I could probably have it. Nor do I feel a need I have something that 99% of the rest of us cannot obtain.
That’s why despite I could have a McClaren, I still drive a POS Miata and Audi with peeling paint.
Because like Escoguy who drives an Uber without people knowing who he really is, likewise , I enjoy keeping a low key so then I know people who I’m friends with really are my friends and not just someone kissing my ass because they need something… Also, my friends also tend to not play these rich people’s version of “who has the bigger dick” game…because, what’s the point of having the biggest dick, if they people playing this game are so old the only way to keep it from being limp is Viagra???

CoronitaParticipant
I understand how tough it can be up there. One of my childhood friends lives up in Woodside and wanted to build a 2nd tennis court on his 5 acre property but was not allowed. He was gonna move but bought the property next to him so now they have 2 courts
Lol.. tech money. It’s like Steve jobs didnt like having a license plate on his car, so he got a new car every month and turns the old one back.
Crazy rich techies.

CoronitaParticipant
Just as so many of the wealthy in the Bay Area, many of my cousins and others whose families wealth predated the arrival of tech, seemed to be ready for a change, and I think some of the negative issues going up there helped them make their decisions.
Since they can live anywhere they wish, and still keep their other properties, some of which they are renting to the techies, they have been motivated to make some changes in their lives for various reasons, none of which have anything to do with finances, and they are very happy with their choices, so, all is well. They especially love now having homes by our beautiful beaches, and that was another big determining factor vs. staying in SFO.
Pfff. The biggest money was not earned here in the States, but over in China. Said cousin and relatives dumped a bundle on entire neighborhood block in Suzhou, China before the factories moved in, where first factory an airline seat manufacturer that moved manufacturing from US there. Lakefront property that was not available to foreign investors, $200k USD that subsequently rented for $5000/month to expats, where value currently sits roughly at 17.5k RMB per sq meter.
I wish I could have gotten in, but again, not available to foreigners…I guess that’s why people here tried to invest in china a decade late… Picking up after the scraps what people there don’t want and try to pawn off to a bigger foreign sucker…Poor foreign investors of Evergrande.

CoronitaParticipant
It seems to be true that many are still relocating to San Diego, and other SoCal coastal cities from the Bay Area. Have quite a few family members who have moved here from there in the past few years, as San Diego has been a total bargain, comparatively speaking. Even some in Marin County are considering a move. Most in Napa and Sonoma plan to stay up there per our last visits.
Funny that you should mention this flyer, that some of your friends in your sphere are interested in relocating down here….because while it does seem like the quasi-wealthy people from bay area might be interested in relocating down here, the old tech wealthy have no interest in relocating down here. My cousin has no interest in relocating from Los Altos Hills. He’s been there in the Bay Area since the early 80ies and was an early exec of ECAD before it merged with SDA and became Cadence Design Systems. Has no interest in relocating anywhere to save on a few pennies. Flyer, your friends sound like Silicon Valley peasants, relatively speaking. Just kidding, sort of.

CoronitaParticipant

Living in the city sucks. I don’t know why my sibling insists in staying in SF and not moving to the burbs. They are paying an arm an a leg for something slightly smaller than my old house in Pac. Heights and then on top of that has to send both their kids to private schools because most public schools suck in the city. The amount they spend on private K-12 will be on the order of how much people would be spending sending them to a private college on the east coast.
I guess it could be worse. At least they don’t live in NYC anymore. What an armpit.Makes no sense.
Was out ubering a few days ago, picked up a SF transplant, he and his spouse paid $5700/month in San Francisco for $700 sf, now live in Santaluz, probably a $2.5M house.
As he has roots here and has been back two years, he was bemoaning all the other Bay Area people coming in. Apparently, there is still a wave incoming as prices are still so much higher and they come see SD, and never want to go back.
CoronitaParticipantI thought it was funny…
[img_assist|nid=27658|title=Crypto Bro’s|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=500]Can’t live in cryptos or stocks…
CoronitaParticipant
Fantastic. You’re all set. We like USAA because they cover just about everything, including boats and planes, which usually require special policies. I remember I had to go off shore to insure some helicopters I was leasing to a flight school several years ago, and it was a pain, so with the exception of the art collection, and a few other things, it’s a great one-stop shop.
…But USAA doesn’t cover just about everything. I can think of several exclusions they don’t cover that they specifically mentioned.
For instance, they don’t cover livestock or horses.
Also, they definitely do not cover in fully value jewelry and bullion precious metals. They cap jewelry and bullion for theft and burglary only around $5000 I think. That’s one of the things companies like Chubb insurance tout that differentiates them from places like USAA… For instance, if missy has a cocktail party leaves her ring on the bathroom sink, and an acquaintance that’s a closet klepto decides to pocket it, despite being a investment banker partner (is just a mental nutcase… Chubbs will cover the appraised value of that ring that was stolen…Not USAA.
CoronitaParticipant
Thanks to a family connection, we currently have USAA, and it’s fantastic for the primary, rentals and cars. Also like Amica.
Dumb question. Are you getting some special rate above and beyond a normal USAA member? Because I’m trying to understand what you meant about “family connection” and USAA.
The only qualification needed to be able to join USAA is you or a family member or relative just needs to have served in the military, worked for the military and/or military contractor.. The terms of being a USAA or any sort special military based credit union, bank, insurance carrier is pretty loose in definition…It’s no different than my parents that worked for a Congress funded non-profit corp for the military qualifies for any credit union or insurance company setup for the military, and by virtue of being related to them, I have the same access to those banks, credit unions, and insurance companies, such as USAA and Aerospace Federal Credit Union.
By “family connection”, are you getting some special rates or treatment that normal USAA members who are somehow remotely related to the US military are not getting?
Damn, the only family connection I have is the one that allowed me onto the Miramar airbase 2 weeks ago to see the Top Gun pre-screening before the general public. I mean, I know a guy as well connected to you probably already saw the prescreening of that, but it was totally awesome seeing it at Miramar, they even had a jet right outside the theater. Best part it was free to all military and guests for the pre screening.
That was a great movie by the way. Imho better than the first one….
I would use my military connection to buy goods and services that are otherwise contraband by california, such as some types of 1 gallon paints and non-CARB exhaust systems, but I think that would be a misuse of my friendship and rather send those orders through addresses in the Presido of friends and family, lol.
CoronitaParticipant
Ours is $2200 and is up for renewal, 3000sf.
One of the lessons I learned from my Dad is that home insurance is not a good area to go with low bidder.
About 30 years ago he went low bidder on his houses and then a rental home of his burned. Total loss. Insurance company refused to pay. He ended up having to take them to court – and won – but it cost him a LOT of time and frustration.
From then on out, he paid more attention to reputation than price and made sure his children learned from that hard-earned lesson.
Also in this inflationary time, we have an auto-adjustment feature on ours to take into account the rise in replacement cost. Something to think about.
That’s very good advice. Don’t skimp on insurance. That said, Foremost and American Modern are highly rated insurance companies.
The biggest issue with homeowner’s insurance is being under-insured and not uping the coverage when building costs go up due to inflation.
The other thing to consider is earthquake insurance, which in SD county is still pretty cheap. You can get one with a high deductible that is only good for catastrophic events for pretty cheap.
“Don’t skimp on insurance” is one of the reasons why I would never get Geico for anything. I’ve had so many friends that tried Geico, and when it came to a claim, they were so cheap to pay out claims for auto collisions. And Geico isn’t really cheap compared to Costco’s American Family Auto Insurance or Hagerty, which also has a great reputation.
If you have a really old car, consider getting Hagerty. Hagerty use to be great insurance for classic and exotic cars that would be an arm and leg to insure normally. But the car doesn’t have to be really a classic or exotic. It just has to be old and in CA, parked in a garage. insurance bill with better coverage is very low even compared to Costco American Family Auto Insurance….I learned that from old porsche and miata owners…
Also, Hagerty does not exclude teen/minor drivers from their policies. So my plan is to insurane my kid on my beater Audi and miata.
CoronitaParticipant
OP, below is a comparison chart from U. S. News that might be helpful, and, of course, bundling always seems to be a good idea. Also, make sure to check the reputation of the company for paying claims. Cheap premiums are great, but if a company has a reputation of hassles with claims, you might want to look elsewhere.
