ParticipantDo any adults in the house play or plan on learning? If not, for a 5yo child, definitely rent or buy a decent full sized keyboard. You just have no idea if they are going to be playing in a few years. Decide later what to do when you have an idea of how serious they are about it.
I play and bought a used upright about 8-9 years ago after looking for over a year. I got a total steal. Like cars, I’m really not sure why you’d buy a brand new piano. My 3 kids all play now and I don’t plan on ever upgrading to a baby grand/grand. Yes, I can tell the difference and grew up playing on a Baldwin grand (my mom plays as well and is a total piano snob) but there’s just not enough of a difference that I can justify the $ and household space for it unless one of the kiddos got very serious about it (and I don’t see that happening so far).
We have a keyboard as well which let me tell ya, that has the advantage of HEADPHONES my friend! Sometimes after hearing 3 sets of piano practice I send them to their room to go goof off on the keyboard instead for my own sanity.

ParticipantYou’re worried about setting the outside of your house on fire with a blowtorch? Ok, maybe you have several fire hazards around your house I don’t know. We don’t. There is no vegetation right next to the house (tent once and you’ll quickly learn not to do that) and the black widows are either along the back and side perimeter of the house on the stucco (hardscape pavers on the ground) or in the fire pit cracks. Rarely they’ve been on the patio table. Common sense applies and would tell you not to torch your eaves, areas where you have dead leaves, needles, trees overhanging, grasses, anything flammable, etc.

ParticipantI assume you’re saying you’re killing that many black widows outside the house, correct? If they are inside, I think it’s a no brainer that you have a big problem.
We have somewhat of a controlled black widow issue. My husband goes out with a blow torch and kills 3-4 every 3-4 months. So it’s fairly contained and there has never been one in the house. They also never come out during the day; they hide. I know their webs at this point so I can spot them, see the problem and tell my husband it’s blow torch time. I’ve never been able to see one during the day and I’ve really tried. Teach your kids to identify the web, the spider, the egg, and to not put their fingers into cracks where they hide.
If you continue killing them yourself, I highly recommend the blow torch! It works flawlessly, you don’t have to get too close, and you can kill the egg sacs easily too.
As for termites, we are on the “plan” for that but I have mixed feelings about it. Also as for tenting, that doesn’t kill subterranean termites which we have had. And by the way, for everyone with your nice, new, expensive wood floors, that’s where we got the subterranean suckers. We put down wood flooring in about 1/2 of our house and I’ll never put it in another room.
