ParticipantLast time I checked, minors can get hunting licenses. I’m not a hunting expert but I thought my husband started at 12. And I guess I should have said USED a gun. To my knowledge, my husband didn’t own any of his guns growing up, his father did. Kind of a moot point when you don’t have to register them though, right?

ParticipantUm, neither scenario applies to me? My mortgage will be paid off AND we have plenty in guaranteed investments, retirement, 529 plans, and taxable investments. We didn’t sacrifice saving and investing to pay off the mortgage. I would never recommend doing that.

ParticipantMy parents did it your way. They ended up losing a ton of money in the stock market crash of 87. Then my father lost his job during Aerospace downsizing a couple years later. The result, well, let’s just say I saw the sheriff nailing the foreclosure noticing on the tree out front of the biggest house in the neighborhood: ours. I won’t do that to my kids, period. They will always have a house to live in. Our house is not an investment vehicle whether you find it silly or not.

ParticipantLike I said, to each their own. This is coming from someone who will have their house paid off at the age of 34. I have plenty invested and I’ll invest plenty more with each of my monthly non mortgage payment.

ParticipantJust curious why you are interested in having a new mortgage at your age? You said there was no penalty withdrawing from your retirement funds so I have to assume you are at least 59.5. I hope you are looking for a 15 year loan at least? To each their own but I would never want the burden of a mortgage in my 60’s, 70’s, etc.

ParticipantWell, that’s a pretty broad statement. I mean the reason why you are buying the gun is important to note. My husband’s family are avid hunters so yes, my husband had his own guns growing up(hunting rifles). The difference is that when you grow up in a hunting family you are taught the correct ways to use guns. Gun safety is taught and reinforced all the time. To this day my husband still cringes when he sees boys playing with toy guns and pointing them at each other. That’s the opposite of the way he was brought up. Guns are serious and you don’t joke around with them. They are not toys and you NEVER point them at another human being. You also don’t go out on the 4th of July and shoot into the air risking injury to yourself or others.
Anyway, not all parents are out of their minds when buying a gun for a minor.

ParticipantDidn’t she see any red flags when she only qualified for 360K yet they wanted her to buy a house for 415K? Her monthly take home pay is 2K for goodness sakes! If you can’t do basic math maybe you shouldn’t own a house.
