ParticipantI don’t ride the coaster because of expense and inconvenience.
Backtrack to the Encinitas Station, pay $4.50 each way, and then on the way home you’d better hit the shuttle down to Sorrento Valley in time, and of course you wait another 30 minutes or so. I don’t think my Chevy Impala with gas oil and brakes wear and tear are that much.

Participantmixx I thought I remembered you from the IT consultants board landing a gig, what happened?
I just can’t imagine RDU being terribly different from Columbia. I suppose it’s possible. I do agree that RDU is probably more cosmopolitan.
FWIW I didn’t like the Raleigh area enough to leave Ohio so I actually commuted for 2 years, traveling down to a room I rented once or twice a month. The drive down 77 through West Virgina, Virginia, and NC is quite scenic, and it was 9 hours I just didn’t mind driving. People would ask why I don’t move down here and I’d say Raleigh is very Clay Aiken, Northeast Ohio, is more Joe Walsh. That was my provincial side kicking in.

ParticipantI don’t mean to defend Chicago, there is really no way I’d consider moving there. I just don’t think “the people” is why I choose to stay in California. The weather, the things to do, the weather, the topography, the sunshine (starting to sound like a broken record)…
I’d take almost any major midwestern city before Chicago, because it’s just too damn big and expensive. If I went back to Cleveland it’s more that “provincially speaking” I fit in a little better, lifestyle is a tad slower, and you don’t have to live so far out of town, to find an affordable but good community. There are some really expensive burbs near the city in greater Chicago.

ParticipantI think people forget how black the south is relative to other areas. I remember staying in Durham for a couple of years, and I worked out in Raleigh, and these areas are pretty well integrated. In fact I kind of felt like Durham was a bit too much, and had I decided to move my family down from Ohio, was thinking more like Cary or Morrisville (also much closer to work).

ParticipantWow the midwesterners get blasted for being provincial. For every interesting person here telling stories of worldly travel, there is a snot-nosed wuss in a Beamer, with a plastic wife.

ParticipantJuice describes a nice area that I am quite familiar with. Not interested in buying, but will probably stay in this area, pending not having to move the kids from one Jr. High to another.

ParticipantI can’t remember but if the schools were San Marcos, it would make a difference. However if I recall these were Carlsbad schools.

ParticipantI kind of agree with you guys on the Sales angle. The only reason I mention this is that I have considered it myself, because I am way more personable than the typical software guy.
In my case I am 38, and probably have another 3-4 years of enjoying coaching little league and such, and getting slightly more involved on the sell side is something I should consider. I actually worked as a consultant for Sun a few years back.
Incidentally my Bro-in-law is in town for some convention or training, and my wife spoke to him about getting into his industry, and he wondered why it took so long to ask because she’d be great. She teaches at a private school making 32K and with the difficulty of getting into public schools here, she is questioning why she isn’t going for the pot of gold. Maybe she can be the big bread winner, as I know my brother in law has done well, and got into the business at roughly the same age (38). Sure there is some international travel, but we seem to be at a point that we can handle it now, and living in such debt with 100K student loans sucks.

ParticipantCan anyone find out if this went through or not? I haven’t seen anything down at that house. It was the subject of some coffee talk in the neighborhood. Rumors of 8 bidders, bidding the price up, and I was saying, no that isn’t exactly how I heard it.

ParticipantIf your kids are public school age is there something to be said for the west side of clairemont (Clairemont HS) vs. the Eastern Edge which feeds Madison HS?
Scores are a little better at CHS. Demographics a slight edge to CHS if you are caucasian, MHS, if you are african-american. Otherwise I hear good things about the Mount street area, but of course that’s from my guy in Linda Vista.

ParticipantBostonAndOC did you get an MBA from a top school? I am just curious, I am a development manager, in software, but I don’t see those kinds of positions so I must not mix in those circles. Granted I have chosen not to go for the gold, as I put a premium on being able to coach Little League, and chapperone the occasional field trip (that outside of work lifestyle). I’ll be 45-46 when both kids are college age, so I suppose in another year or two it might be time to get more ambition, but right now the job is fine, and pushing doesn’t seem to be in the cards for me.
Depending on the age of your children moving around a lot is hard on them, I have my oldest starting Jr. High next year.

ParticipantTotally off-topic, but soccer players are definitely more “aerobically” conditioned than most football players but aerobic conditioning is but one small and fairly insignificant measure of an athlete. I don’t think you can absolutely claim the best soccer players here in America have the same total package as say LaDanian Tomlinson. LT will have probably the same or better cut-back or change of direction ability, better stop-start ability, better acceleration and deceleration, and is completely stronger top to bottom.
Now if you want to compare Soccer players to Nose Tackles, then yes, they are more athletic overall, though some of those 300 lb. guys have 35+ inch vertical leaps. Also there aren’t many freaks of nature like Terrell Owens playing soccer.
Actually I’d take the typical Lebron James type NBA player as also being a more complete athlete. 6’8″ 240 with that kind of breakaway speed? All-state WR before giving up football his Sr. Year. Michael Jordan was an all-state QB as was Allen Iverson.

ParticipantI wouldn’t bother trying to defend the metroplex some are just inclined to hate everything Texas. As I have said in the past I’d consider going back, but I am not actively looking for jobs anywhere.
While we are stereotyping every single time I see someone in person who cracks on Texas like this, they are the spineless bespectacled metrosexual type. A guy who looks like he jogs but doesn’t deadlift. For once I want so see some roided up musclehead make fun of Texas culture, but it’s usually someone not terribly impressive — physically speaking.
I am just hoping TheBreeze is a woman because they are allowed to crack on the HS Football culture. In fact women are allowed to hate football as far as I am concerned. If it’s a man, then he is out of the club. Men are not allowed to crack on football at any level including Pop Warner.
I miss the football culture, I went to a local La Costa Canyon game, and couldn’t believe how lame the crowd was on the other side (RB). The RB crowd was so small it didn’t even seem all the parents made the trip. The halftime shows in Texas were great. I went to plenty of HS Football games in the H-E-B area, and when I lived in West Texas, traveled to Odessa Permian (conference rival) to watch the kids play under the “Friday Night Lights”. Great entertainment for me and my wife, but she is the type who wants to kick our boys in the butts to play a little football. I could see the urban brie types not enjoying it, but there are plenty of cultural things to do. We went to Phantom at a nice facility in Ft. Worth, where I was embarrased to find everyone where suits (didn’t believe my wife). I remember watching (I followed Abilene) this year’s super bowl champ (Dominic Rhodes) losing to Drew Brees, in the state finals at Texas Stadium.
Incidentally I think Football tailbacks are the greatest athletes in sport. Size, grace, hip mobility, strength, speed, vertical leap, agility, vision.

ParticipantEven the couple of homes that seemed to have sold at a profit over the 05 price, were probably cutting it awfully close with carrying costs, upgrades, maintenance, property taxes and selling costs.
