Participantsdr we have thought about taking it up to some mission my wife wants to visit, but haven’t gotten around to it. I just meant that for work it’s too much of a hassle.

Participantsdappraiser, Nirvana gets a lotta credit for the bust up, but recently, I have also told my budding young hair-band loving son, that The Black Crowes also stormed onto the scene as regular kick-ass rock’n’rollers without fluff. And of course Encinitas’ own Eddie Vedder and his little troupe helped out.

ParticipantWhen I saw the thread title, I thought it was going to be a public transportation champion extolling the virtues of “the coaster”. If I didn’t have young kids and sports activities and had an extra hour a day (as well as $9), I’d probably have some fun and ride but I digress.

ParticipantI live there am quite active with a local Little League, and coach some basketball as well, and thus run across a lot of people. I definitely fit into sdrealtor’s anecdotal NCC resident, and I have a hard time believing there are not a lot more like us. Sure there are kids with single moms in apts. and a few teachers kids, but there are a surprising number of attorney’s, high level salesmen, big finance types engineers way up the chain, etc. Heck one guy that coaches my younger son who seems so meek and humble (but drives amazing cars), I just found out has been CEO of two companies, one that was very well known in the tech industry. I’d have never guessed that coaching around the guy.
On the other hand in my neighborhood, I am one of the few well educated, high earners, but most of my neighbors bought 12-15 years ago when you could be a bartender or school janitor, and still purchase a home. The homes are all small (>1100 Sq. Feet) All interesting people, and quite fun, and have been very accepting of a renter like me. Wife would gladly buy in this area, except I told her anything north of 350K for these houses forget it I am not touching since rent is $1800.

ParticipantI’d recommend using your rewards card a lot, but not using it to pay off the car.
Car loans or any installment loans are merely a tradeline on your credit score and thus paying off the car loan early really doesn’t mean much one way or the other. If the interest rate is high and you have cash pay it off, because a car loan is neither helping nor hurting you.
On the other hand if you use the credit cards sparingly such that small balances do show up on your credit report (cycle different from paying it off) that will help improve your score.
One of the factors that helps is outstanding credit available. Another is that you keep balances to less than 10% of the total credit available. If 10% is too hard, 30% is much better than say 50%.
You have a lot of time. If you want to get into the 800’s you need to use credit cards at some point, you just don’t need to carry a balance.

ParticipantHappy Renter I misspelled Bulrush but look at this link from June of 2006. House look familiar? At that time I was able to figure out the house had been on the market for a year (using Google Cache).

I can’t believe someone bought in Oct. 2006 at $939 and expects to unload at a price where the home sat on the market a long time. Check Google Cache for 2068 Bulrush and note how long she tried selling that house, and came down a long way.
Then again one born every minute. The worst thing about this place is two huge Torrey Pine trees in the neighbor to the south’s yard, block a great view.

ParticipantWe took our little league team to Today’s Pizza, the other night. Much more enjoyable than Oggi’s. Sure Oggi’s has all the TVs, but getting your order filled at a decent time is hard.

ParticipantDepending what part of San Diego you are going to work, another possibility would be Cardiff, Encinitas, Solana Beach, etc. Problem is some of these towns have less rentals, or else the owner makes more money renting for horse season, and isn’t looking for long term renters.
However craigslist is a good resource. There are still rentals in these towns, and it might split your commute. Del Mar or Carmel Valley are also options.

ParticipantI wouldn’t do it, and as a Vet I have VA available to me. In general now is not the time to buy a temporary home. Remember when you get PCS orders to another base, the military does not help you to sell that home. The area around Edwards is probably due for a big-time correction, and that same house might be about 40% less in a few years. Then if you move you cannot sell.

ParticipantI remember a visit back to Ohio when the family had yet to move out here. One afternoon I got the oil changed, some scruffy white kids did it. Buzz to the car wash, white and black kids do my car. I motor over to Taco Bell, where there are black and white people waiting on me. Lastly I have some guys coming over to do some property beautification on my house to prep to sell and they were white folks.
My wife was born in Honduras and we always get along with hispanics quite easily, so this isn’t a knock on them because they are just wanting work. Rather it’s to slam the idiotic premise that “people just won’t do those jobs. Hell my sister cleans an office building once a week for like $20. She has 3 kids at home, and stays with them during the day, and this $20 helps fund extra activities or whatever.
The problem with San Diego (err California) is the wealthy business owner doesn’t want to pay for labor. I think people will work at Taco Bell if the wages represented some fraction of the cost of living. I am guessing the Taco Bell guy here in Encinitas makes a buck or so more than the guy in Ohio with the cost of living in Ohio being squat.

ParticipantIf you have kids and have to pick one over the other, would you rather have Poway Schools or San Marcos? This should be a fairly easy question. You choose San Marcos if you think the schools are basically good enough, and the housing is better bang for the buck. Otherwise, pick a better school system.

ParticipantSome of the Detroit area suburbs are quite nice from everything I hear.

ParticipantBecause of Park Place a big chunk of the Cardiff market are not SFH, so it’s likely that she is seeing activity there and in parts of Encinitas where you see a lot of twin homes. Those show up as condos in the MLS correct?

ParticipantI believe Sabre Springs residents attend Mt Carmel HS for instance (and other PUSD lower level schools).
At one time when looking in Penasquitos, I was mapping out which neighborhoods attended which high schools. Making out the divide between Mt. Carmel and Westview was a royal pain.
