ParticipantJust came across this and thought it was interesting. Has anyone else heard about it?

“Here’s a guy you want to bet on– Li Ka-Shing.
Li is reportedly the richest person in Asia with a net worth well in excess of $30 billion, much of which he made being a shrewd property investor.
Li Ka-Shing was investing in mainland China back in the early 90s, way back before it became the trendy thing to do. Now, Li wants out of China. All of it.
Since August of last year, he’s dumped billions of dollars worth of his Chinese holdings. The latest is the $928 million sale of the Pacific Place shopping center in Beijing– this deal was inked just days ago.
Once the deal concludes, Li will no longer have any major property investments in mainland China.”

Participant
LMAO – I have a black SUV that I wash maybe 2-3 times a year. I park in the garage mostly – so it isn’t as bad as it sounds… but obviously I’m not a car person. I take it to he place on Clairemont Dr. above Mission Bay, or I do it myself. Haven’t seen any issues with etching. But haven’t been looking.
My husband washes his truck every year, need it or not. But it’s coming up on 20 years old. LOL
Same here. 🙂

ParticipantIf you can honestly earn income from the house as a rental (taking into consideration all of econprof’s very valid points), and IF you think there’s a possibility that you will be moving back down here in the future, then it might be a good idea to rent it out.
OTOH, if you’d barely be breaking even, or if you’d be losing money, then it might be better to sell. Also, of you don’t think you’ll be living here again, it might be a good idea to sell, as well…a bird in hand and all.
Best of luck with your decision, and with your move up north!

Participant
I’ve had good luck finding contracting firms from Yelp reviews, honestly.
Second this.

Participant
The OP didn’t ask for how to make it, but multiple people suggested trying to make your own. I did, cause I enjoy custom projects. But I will say it’s not trivial.
There a lot of custom fabrication, especially the bracketing and hinge work that require precision. Especially when you are talking about doors that can weigh in excess of a hundred pounds depending on span. And to get it all nicely aligned in the end.
Here’ mine. The structure itself is all steel underneath with a wood facade.

Very nicely done! That’s a beautiful gate, TeCKis.

Participant
I used parmesan from Wisconsin today in the pesto, buy it in bulk and it sits in the freezer quite well. It tastes great! Grew the basil, that will definitely pay taxes on my next Oreo shake. I freeze the pesto for winter along with Spaghetti sauce for the kids, made with tomatoes, peppers and onions I grew. There is enough of both to have it every other week with leftovers. Most stay at home parents probably don’t do this stuff but I do.
There are about 75 bottles of frozen watermelon juice in there too, organic all not taxed.
How much could you save making your own Oreo shakes?
They (the Fed, the govt, and economists) hate savings. It cannot be taxed, tracked, or accounted for in GDP stats. This is why SAHPs are so maligned. It’s better “for the economy” if you outsource your work to someone else, so that they can outsource their work to you.

Participant
Hmm, somehow I missed this old thread. Anyway, I was fascinated by the story of Charles Hatfield, the infamous rainmaker who was hired by the San Diego City Council to end a drought and refill Lake Morena. Now, some will say he was a scam artist, and he may well have been one, but it rained so hard that mudslides and flooding killed at least 20 people.
I’ve never killed anyone (that I know of) but I do sometimes tend to overdo things a teeny bit.
What a fascinating story. Thank you for sharing, Hatfield. 🙂

Does this mean that mini-CE is here? If so, congratulations!!! 🙂
Hope you (and/or your wife) get some more sleep. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you might want to read this book:
“On Becoming Baby Wise: Giving Your Infant the GIFT of Nighttime Sleep”
After seeing the incredible results with our friends’ kids, we followed it ourselves. All three of our kids were basically sleeping through the night (6-8 hours, or more) by 12 weeks, and they were all waking up and entertaining themselves for a bit more. Not one of them would wake up screaming or crying…I’d usually hear them singing or making fun noises when they’d wake up.
Have tons of fun! This time is stressful, but you will miss it when it’s gone.

From my understanding, a desktop version is in the works, but the first priority is mobile since that’s were all the growth is at. I work at an auto dealer and am in charge of our online marketing and the other week, our factory marketing consultant showed me how traffic to our desktop website has been continually dropping over the last few years (precipitously in the last 2) but visits to our mobile site have exploded. With that being the case, we ended up allocating a lot more resources to our mobile website. If I were to guess, that’s why they’re doing the iphone app first.
Yes, I totally understand this, but some of us old farts still like our desktops. 🙂

ParticipantI’m surprised nobody’s answered this one yet.
Try SDR. PM him if he doesn’t respond to this. His username is SD Realtor (capital letters, lowercase letters is another Pigg Realtor).
Good luck with your home search!

ParticipantTough situation for everyone involved.
The Israelis I used to work for were the badass type, as were the Israeli-owned security firms they worked/contracted with. All were high-ranking officers in the Israeli military. They took me under their wings as a sort of hybrid Jew (1/4 ancestry, not religious) and wanted me to study Israeli/Jewish history, etc.
Prior to that, I was staunchly pro-Israel, courtesy of my strict Southern Baptist education (very, very pro-Israel). When I started reading about it, I couldn’t find the part where the Jews were done wrong WRT Palestine. It turned my whole understanding of Israel on its head. Funny how doing actual research will do that to you, as opposed to just believing the popular rhetoric and propaganda.

this is zillow and redfin and ziprealty for the Facebook and tweeter crowd.
I don’t really see it that way (I’m not part of that crowd)… to me the appeal is really that the search is a lot more powerful than redfin and the others. To a nerd like me who likes to be able to search across lots of data and parameters to dial in on things, that’s pretty cool.
No matter how good the searches are, it is totally inadequate for me if I’m unable to view it on a full-size desktop monitor.
Agree with this.
