Now Go Home🙂
Which brings to mind another bumper sticker from the same era:
Welcome to San Diego

LAAFTERHOURS
ParticipantI created an online music magazine for the Los Angeles Electronic Music and Dance Industry in 1999 and ran it through 2003. Kind of like rolling stone for techno/ house etc. Had a crew of reporters doing interviews, articles and such and started to branch it nationally. LAAFTERHOURS was the company name and I have used it most online hobby sites. Its an easy name, never duplicated.

ParticipantInterned at a then big telco company for 14 weeks in a temporary cubicle piled with stuff. I was suppose to be in a real cubicle/office from day 1, but the company movers took 11 weeks to move two chairs, 1 desktop computer, and a 2-drawer file cabinet.
I tried to move things myself, but wasn’t allowed to because of “union rules”. I visited a few movers’ offices to get an ETA in vain, only to be turned away because they were too busy playing Minesweeper.Hence, fat_lazy_union_worker

JustLurking
ParticipantI starting reading this site a few years ago and never intended to post anything. One day, I felt compelled to comment on something (don’t remember what it was) and made up this stupid name. My plan was to never post again, but I got sucked in. I really need to come up with a “real” name because this one is embarrassingly stupid.

ParticipantI started posting as Rustico because it is a humorous name I often use in Spanish speaking circles. I have never found a translation for Russell. Anyway I changed to Russell which is my actual first name. I did it to experiment with giving up the anonymity…. for various reasons.
One of my favorites names I’ve seen on piggington’s is “speedingpullet”. It cracks me up everytime.

ParticipantMine is pretty obvious but here’s the story behind it. The first RE blog I found was Ben Jones. It was refreshing to find contrarian iewpoints but it was way too extreme for my tastes. Eveyone was really nasty to each other and there was never any real analysis that I could find, just barbs and reposting of articles. One day I decided I would post under sdrealtor and watch them all attack me for the fun of it. No one from the other side had ever posted on it that I had seen and they went nuts. I only posted a few times to enjoy the carnage. When I found Rich’s site, I knew I was home and decided to stick with the moniker.

I got kicked off a ben’s blog for fighting back against a guy named MORT and another named Getstucco. All I did was parrot back the stupid ways they were posting (without the profanity some of them were using).I got kicked off and my post were deleted but they stayed without a peep from Ben(that I know of). I wonder if getstucco still lives with his MIL?

ParticipantI am a very literal person…. the rest is history.
I’ve looked (seriously, as in hundreds of hours in some years, and hiring attorneys and real estate agents…) for a home for a long time without buying yet. I took a break for the first half of the 1980’s, and a few breaks of a year or two elsewhere, but I’ve been (renting and) looking for a home to buy more or less continuously since 1975.
I’ve researched homes in most counties in the states I’ve lived in, and in most states in the US, and most countries in Europe (west and east), Australia, New Zealand, and China and Singapore and Indonesia….
None of my family or friends believes I will ever buy. Only I do.

None of my family or friends believes I will ever buy. Only I do.

I’ve looked (seriously, as in hundreds of hours in some years, and hiring attorneys and real estate agents…) for a home for a long time without buying yet. KeymasterHeh heh… funny thread.
My dad’s ancestor’s moved to Uruguay in the late 1800s, presumably from the Tuscany region of Italy. A hundred years later, more or less, my parents decided to name me Richard.
Well, you did ask. 😉
BTW they actually called me by the full name, “Richard” — even as a kid I thought it sounded infuriatingly stuffy, like I should be wearing a child-sized ascot and smoking jacket. Early on I began insisting on the abbreviated sobriquet.
Of course, this has led to a new problem of having frequent run-ins with my least favorite form of humor (or humor attempts, anyway), puns. And the worst subset of that loathsome humor genre, the name-based pun.
But I do go on.

ParticipantDuring the boom years one of the things that really bugged me was the pompous way house sellers would write in the listing, “Seller Will Entertain Offers Between $550K – $600K.” Or they would many times shorten that to, “Seller will EOB $550K – $600K.” Sometimes they didn’t even have time to write all that out and instead would only put, “SWEOB 550k-600k.”
So my response became my Piggington pen name, “BuyerWillEPB,” short for “Buyer Will Entertain Prices Below what YOU paid for it.”

All this time I thought “BuyerWillEPB” meant “Buyer Will Eat Peanut Butter” seemed to make sense at the time.

ParticipantBeyond the obvious reason, like AN, it is my screen name for anything and everything else, that way I don’t forget my screen name when logging on to the various sites for porn, dating, swingers, cheating wives and any other place where there might be pictures of me naked.
Over time, I have been given the nickname “TG.” Not even sure who gave it to me but when spending time in the seedier part of the electronic world, I don’t use that nickname because it has a whole different meaning.

Okay, I had to google that one.

No imagination either…live in California and rent. 🙂
Actually, at the time, renting was considered so low that I wanted to poke at the bulls a bit and get them going. I felt that at some point in the future, the tables would turn and renting would actually become the trendy thing to do. After years of hearing how we were crazy for not buying, now all I here is “you’re so lucky!” when people find out we’re renters. 🙂

ParticipantWell, mine is pretty obvious, but I’ll have to add my story anyway.
I’ve lived in the center of cities for the past 22 years with one exception – a 4 month period in Mission Hills/Hillcrest. Where other people are alarmed by hearing sirens & the homeless fights/rants outside their windows, to me that’s comforting – it’s home! The 4 months in Mission Hills I could hear crickets, dogs(wolfs) howling, and the wind – Scared the shit out of me! Got lucky and the condo we were renting went to short sale and we negotiated our way out of it and moved back to the city! I always have to chuckle to myself when one of our suburb friends come to visit and ask if its save to park their car on the street – I’m thinking when I go out to there places some guy with a shotgun is going to come out and say he’s going to shoot me because I’m Trespassin’. Anyway, to each their own.

I felt that something more absurd might reflect the silliness in my personality too much and cost me business if any clients read.
This is the same reason I first decided that I needed to have a silly picture of me on my business card (perhaps as a jedi) and then just decided that no picture was best.
Many of my best clients are far more serious than I am.
If it was all up to me my handle would be “beerandpool”, my business card would have a picture of me as a soul train dancer and my office would be the back patio of the Alibi with occasional outcalls to Wine Steals…
That is of course until my son was old enough to read or understand it.
Then, again, I would have to be a touch more serious.
So, Rich, do you speak that weird Uruguay Spanish?

ParticipantName is dumb and has nothing to do with RE. The first time I went to San Diego was when I was 16 and apart of an outrigging team made up of my high school buddies. So anyways, we enrolled in a race here in SD, told our parents that each of us was sleeping at another guys house before the race and that the coach (we didnt have a coach) was driving us down, threw a party at a guys house who’s parents were outa town (incidently where I met my first GF) got plastered like you only do in school, (I stayed sober to drive) and at 3am drove to san diego to race at 9 am the next morning. The weather sucked, the surf was up, and we were all hung over as hell, except for me, who was 1man and hadnt slept in 26 hours. We were very proud that we were not the last team to finish, and we didnt flip the boat (though we did nearly hit the sea wall going in/out of mission bay.
Anyways the name of the team was Da Wrecking Crew, and my initals are AP. Well really the name was ‘captain winky and the pocket rockets’, but we couldnt wear that as a shirt at our little private christian school where we were getting PE credit for doing this. Anyways, we all had shirts that said DWCxx.When I moved to SD in 2006 the only ties I had to the city was that one trip, and an ex Girl Friend. Since I wasnt about to name myself after her, DWCAP it was.

ParticipantSold my Encinitas dump to some poor sucker in 2005. Started googling “San Diego Real Estate Bubble” and came across this site. Back then had no idea the size of the real estate bubble and the eventual impact it would have on the world economy I hate my login name, it makes me sound like a realtor and I always forget it.

Good old days …
Ha ha… gverdi, you’ve dug up some serious old stuff there. That second link was the original “bubble primer”. This was later expanded a bit into the two-part primer on the current site.
The first link was basically the same article, but with some bizarre rhetorical flourishes (notably the electrode motif) inserted by the Financial Sense editor.
Pretty funny…

Rich, I was so happy to find your articles since in late 2004 I was considered a “lunatic” when I was telling to some people that real estate cannot go up forever …

The forums I frequent that enforce a screen name policy of “full names only” tend to contain the most cogent, thoughtful posts online.
Nothing against my fellow Piggs, who are a pretty smart, well-read group of people. But I have seen some knock-down bare-knuckled flame brawls here.
IMHO we could all use a little more civility in our lives.

four walling
ParticipantI was in Las Vegas reading a newspaper article about Robert Goulet’s wife bitching about the fact that “Robert is a big star and should not have to resort to four walling”.
I asked my girlfriend, who hails from Las Vegas, what a four waller is. She said generally speaking it refers to a “has been” star who has to pay to play-they rent the showroom, sell the tickets and organize all the grunt work needed to fill the seats.
I thought to myself “what a tragic-and humorous lifestyle all at the same time!”
I am not a four waller, but it is my handle.

ParticipantI was working with “unicode” which is a standard that catalogs many of the truly amazing number of characters and symbols used in the world’s cultures, both now and in the past. There are over 100,000 symbols there now, and that still doesn’t cover everything.
Anyway I came across this area:
http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/block/yijing_hexagram_symbols/images.htmThe names were just so prosaic and evokative. I love them all.
In particular, THE KEEPING STILL MOUNTAIN really struck me.
I initially interpreted it as an ancient expression of respect for nature. I know now that this is an I-Ching Hexagram that means something completely different, but I still like the imagery.

http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/block/yijing_hexagram_symbols/images.htmThe names were just so prosaic and evokative. I love them all.
In particular, THE KEEPING STILL MOUNTAIN really struck me.
I initially interpreted it as an ancient expression of respect for nature. I know now that this is an I-Ching Hexagram that means something completely different, but I still like the imagery.

moneymaker
ParticipantI was originally “threadkiller”, i.e. the last word. Then i got tired of having the last word and became moneymaker. Just made it up out of thin air (hey if the government can do it, then so can I), I’m not the world famous poker player or a counterfeiter. Although I did just buy “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Poker” for 50¢ at the local library sale, so there is hope for me yet. Have had some good luck with money, but not the kind that wins the lottery.

Hatfield
ParticipantHmm, somehow I missed this old thread. Anyway, I was fascinated by the story of Charles Hatfield, the infamous rainmaker who was hired by the San Diego City Council to end a drought and refill Lake Morena. Now, some will say he was a scam artist, and he may well have been one, but it rained so hard that mudslides and flooding killed at least 20 people.
I’ve never killed anyone (that I know of) but I do sometimes tend to overdo things a teeny bit.

four walling
ParticipantI was in Las Vegas reading a newspaper article about Robert Goulet’s wife bitching about the fact that “Robert is a big star and should not have to resort to four walling”.
I asked my girlfriend, who hails from Las Vegas, what a four waller is. She said generally speaking it refers to a “has been” star who has to pay to play-they rent the showroom, sell the tickets and organize all the grunt work needed to fill the seats.
I thought to myself “what a tragic-and humorous lifestyle all at the same time!”
I am not a four waller, but it is my handle.

Reading this blog kept me from purchasing a PUD in Del Mar in Jan 06. I’m not sure whether to be happy or mad. It hasn’t really gone down much in price since then.
LesBear how much for the 429 Mustang model? Used to own a 69 Mach 1 428CJ black on black that would have smoked your 429 :).
I like to thank the other posters on here. I have learned alot, about a lot of things other than real estate, on here. -

ParticipantA couple of stories behind mine.
The easy one is it was based on an idea for a rock band that I have. That’s in process.
The other and older back story is that back in high school I used to play a lot of sports and train indoor/outdoor for hours a day. The appetite I had was superhuman so I decided I would use those powers for good to rid my friends and their families of their fatty foods thus saving them from health and weight issues later on. Someone actually hand made me a cape for my heroic deeds.
