ParticipantIf one has no choice but to do manual labor all day, it’s hard to gain weight no matter what metabolism they have. That’s why the Mexican Pima don’t gain weight — they (literally) work their asses off. If one lives a typical “American” lifestyle where they are not compelled to burn thousands of calories a day, then genetics is the primary influence of weight. That’s why the American Pima have more issues than other Americans in general — all of the Pima are genetically disposed toward obesity.
You didn’t read all of the report. The diet is at least as much of a factor as the level of physical activity. In the US the Pima are eating highly processed, refined grains and sugars, lots of animal fat, etc…. In Mexico they are eating the same natural diet that they have eaten for many thousands of years. Unrefined grains, lean meats, and vegetables. And of course, their level of activity is consistent with their caloric intake.
Certainly they are genetically predisposed towards obesity when fed an unnatural diet of processed grains, refined sugars, and large amounts of fats with few fresh vegetables or fruits. So are the rest of us.
I don’t expect anything to change though because the food lobby is very powerful in the US. They make a lot of money poisoning the population. And of course the health care industry makes lots of money treating our ailments. Capitalism at work!

ParticipantIt’s well known that a malfunctioning thyroid can be a cause of obesity. There’s also medical evidence that supports the position that people really can’t do much about their natural weight — it is predominately determined by their genetic metabolism. Of course anyone could simply eat less, but I have no doubt that obese people genuinely feel more hunger than those with average weight.
If that’s true then why are the US Pima Indians suffering an obesity and diabetes epidemic while the Mexican Pima aren’t? Genetically they are about as close as two groups of people can be. Looks like it’s the food and activity levels, at least according to the study I linked to…

ParticipantMy argument had to do solely with being forced to purchase a federally mandated product or face the risk of sanction.
What about SSDI? That stands for Social Security and Disability INSURANCE. Try not paying it sometime and see what happens to you. It’s not a tax, it is a federal insurance program that we all must comply with by law. You can’t opt out.
The only difference between SSDI and this new healthcare scam is that the money will go straight to corporations rather than into a public trust.

ParticipantDo you really think this will benefit the insurance companies? The last I heard, was that the insurance industry is fighting the bill.
They are fighting anything that will prevent them from doing business as usual or anything that will lower their payout from uncle sam. They definitely want a healthcare bill, since it will force more people to purchase their useless insurance. They just don’t want anything in the bill that will make them have to pay claims or actually provide a useful service.
