Participant
I like my circa 2001 kitchen cabinets, but I hate their color… a little too light for my taste. I would like to change them to something darker. Is staining or repainting something doable? (As you can see from my questions, I’m not an experienced DIYer…)
Look into refacing for a fraction of the cost of new cabinets.

Prick was a coward. Should have shot himself.. Only upside, I hope they put him in general population…
I think Colorado (at least theoretically) still has the chair. As much as I dislike the death penalty, a death sentence in this case wouldn’t make me too upset.
My prediction is that Holmes will be advised to cop a plea that he was legally insane at the time of the shooting and in the weeks leading up to it. He can’t really go to trial. It’s a huge waste of time and money. There were hundreds of witnesses who saw his hair colored red as “the Joker” and that was exactly the way he was arrested . . . If found legally insane, he will likely end up at a state psychiatric facility, at least for the first year.
What is most troubling to me is that Holmes entered the theatre as an unarmed regular customer and no alarm was set off when Holmes exited the emergency exit to get his body armour and weapons. Had there been, it would have likely alerted theatre security to the door and he would have never made it back in to do the shooting. I think this issue could end up being a cause of action in civil proceedings against the owners of the theatre.
Well, looks like the prosecutors/judge threw the book at Holmes this morning by double-charging him and he said nothing except to agree to waive time. As it should be. He has nothing to lose at this point.
It also appears that Holmes was engaged in psychiatric counseling just prior to the incident. Since the incident appears to be premeditated, one wonders whether the act of seeking and engaging in counseling in the days/weeks leading up to the shooting was also premeditated.
Holmes may have actually mailed his therapist his plans for carrying out the shooting prior to its execution (a cry for help?) but the pkg sat in the university mailroom for a week and his therapist did not receive it until the Monday after the shootings took place. Of course, the university turned the pkg over to police.

Holmes’ therapist specializes in treating schizophrenia.
Holmes’ attorneys filed a motion Friday demanding that the court “immediately produce all discovery pertaining to the seizure of the package.”

…Yeah, we could attempt to totally eliminate one-in-a-million crime, but that would lead to a totally controlled world that’s not much fun to live in. Any litigation against the theatre would be money grubbing, plain and simple.
I understand. But I think it will happen, regardless . . .btw, those “emergency exit” doors are supposed to set off alarms. You have to ask yourself what happened with that and if they did, why didn’t the theatre security respond?
The victims’ families are entitled to these answers and they no doubt will get them … in one way or another…
Sounds like answers are beginning to be forthcoming …

I don’t know CO law but I predict lawyers for the victims will state that customers have a reasonable right to be kept safe while patronizing public venues.
I’ve seen a lot of stuff like this in my day, including the way it all plays out . . . ad nauseum. Stay tuned.

Participant
Find an ugly color or a demo with a REAL transmission (read, not a 2-pedal sissymatic) and negotiate, negotiate, negotiate.
I’m sure there are ugly colors and maybe even a 2011 still left but they are unfortunately all probably “sissymatics,” spdrun. Very, very few newer models these days which are sold in the US have std transmissions anymore. With that said, I learned to drive on a “3 on a tree.” ;=D
squat250 (aka walterwhite and scaredycat) has been used to “negotiating” every day for his clients for years. He HAS TO or the “system” would be clogged unmercifully and CA would end up having to build and staff more Big Houses for them to reside in ;=}
see: http://piggington.com/user/publicdefender
CA taxpayers simply cannot afford this anymore.
squat will find a way to make a deal on a Honda. This is small potatoes to him.

ParticipantBack to the OP. zzz, I wouldn’t focus on this too much, considering the age of the properties you are considering. Do the best you can with the City microfiche at the Planning Dept but don’t get too caught up in the fact that an existing garage is too close to the back fence. Obviously, some of this (unpermitted) work is “grandfathered.” I doubt anyone down there will give you a rough time over a rear patio “room addition” slapped up in 1953 without a permit.
Are you concerned because you plan to gut and remodel the interior of a Craftsman or perhaps legally add onto one? If so, I question why someone would be looking at properties this age where the room proportions and their original built-ins lend to the whole authenticity of a Craftsman. I could see adding a walk-in closet, interior laundry room or master bath using the existing space but I don’t think it’s prudent to stray too much from the original footprint or the house’s character might be lost (which is the entire reason for buying it in the first place). The buyer would be better off buying a larger Craftsman to begin with, such as those which can be found in Burlingame, South Park, Mission Hills and the Morley Field area.
If I was in escrow on a property in those zip codes, I would hire Parra Bldg consultants to inspect it during escrow. They have decades of experience in your areas of choice and will tell you much more than you thought to ask about a property. I would highly recommend following them everywhere on the property on inspection day.

What you REALLY want to know is if any part of the foundation is cracked and if there is any evidence of mold under the subfloor, behind the baseboards or on the inside of the stemwalls. These problems are expensive to fix. Don’t worry too much about an antiquated termite-eaten detached garage or cracked driveway strips, stair stoops and patios. This can all be fixed to today’s standards. Look for a 65-70 ft wide lot or alley access. If you are fortunate, you may find both of these in a property you are interested in!
Good luck, zzz!

svelte, would you agree that your son couldn’t have found a better-running car for $4K?
Has he taken it out on the open road, yet?
Someone pulled out in front of him and totaled it.
That’s a shame. He likely only got $2500 from the ins co (assuming the other party was insured or he had UIM coverage). Hopefully, he had a bill of sale to present to the ins co.
The bodies on these cars have many layers and are VERY expensive to fix.

Participant
. . . Many cities knock on your door when a water heater is put to the curb to check permit . . .
I can believe this, birmingplumb, and have been witness and/or a helper to countless DIY water-heater installations in my day. The trick is to put the old one immediately in the back of a pickup (to go to the dump).
We always installed them on an 18″ or higher wood or concrete pedestal and strapped them (for earthquake protection) per code.
Uninc areas in SD County do NOT have a contract with the trash collection services to pick up large discarded items for free but most of the cities do.
Nevertheless, I’ve always gotten rid of the old one the same time as a new one was installed or saved it for a few days in the backyard until a pickup was avail to go to the dump.
Thanks for reminding me about the vent screws. I just checked and put two more in, realizing a month ago that the vent was loose ;=]

Participant
My son bought a 89 Lexus LS400 for $4K last year. 160K miles, faded paint, cracked dash pad, a few rock chips but otherwise in good shape.
I’d say that is quite a bit of depreciation on a car that sold new for $35-40K.
The general rule is that car value will bottom out at 25% after 10 years. That LS400 was down to about 10% of its original purchase price.
Ask ANY Certified Toyota mechanic and they will tell you. Not only that, if you have one to sell or part out, they will buy it or get it sold for you very quickly.

Participant

who do you think is going to win the gold in curling?
Farrah Fawcett.
pssst …. Allan … she was moved from Aspen to LA over three years ago. It’s kind of hard for her to travel now.

And “curling” might be kind of difficult to do from her new “digs” (pun intended) one plot to the right of Merv Griffin and 2 plots to the left of Rodney Dangerfield …
And don’t tell me you still have her 1976 bikini poster scotch-taped to the inside of your closet door :=0

ParticipantToy pickups and 4-runners can easily last 300+k miles as do Lexuses (if properly maintained). The Lexus Luxury Sedan (model years ’89 to ’00) was built to last ~500K miles.

Participant
Agree, toyota and Lexus barely depreciate, not worth it to buy used. Euro luxury brands depreciate like mad the first 3-4 years
Toyota and Lexus DO depreciate after the Certified Used period is over or they no longer qualify for it. Toyota Motor Co has extended this period up to the last eight model years, depending on mileage and condition of vehicle.
ocrenter, you might be SHOCKED at the good Toyota/Lexus deals for model years 2004 and older, ESP if paying cash or purchasing from a private party.

Participant
. . . BTW, growing up in the SF/Bay Area, the joke was that BMW stood for “Basic Marin Wheels”. The view from Sausalito is amazing, as are the houses tucked up in the hills, but until Zuckerberg responds to my request to “gift” me $10MM, I’m going to have to wait to live there.
You and I both, Allan.
A couple of years back I drove the winding road from the 101 to Muir Beach and did drive-bys on some listed properties off that road. I love, love, LOVE the lush privacy of those properties and there are fixers to be had but I can’t do the road on a daily basis, due to my vertigo. I ESP can’t be a passenger! So having a peek view of Mt Tam from inside the redwoods, no matter how alluring, is not a good plan for me :={
The same goes for Mt Helix (LM), where all my fav mid-century ranches on 1/2++ AC lie. YIKES!!

Participant
5 spd manual hatchback. coveted DX model. dog vomited only one time in back. mouse families have nested once in back under spare tire. comes with many bumperstickers included. has all glass windows. has minor rear and front damage. dents. roof vibrates at high speeds. no radio. has glove compartment AND ashtray. Silver but peeling. also the hatchback struts dont workso you can get guillotined if not careful. i use a vise pliers to hold it open. will show buyer how.
has had 3,000 in repairs over the last 18 months with receipts.
i was thinking of maybe ripping out all the upholstery and carpeting and removing all the seats and just installing one fancy leather racing drivers seat. gotta get rid of smell.
also wondering if a well written craigslist ad could become a viral internet sensation on this car…
scaredy, do you have a passport? You could take it to TJ and have the interior ripped out and redone in carpet or vinyl floors; leather or pleather … what’s your pleasure? You might be surprised how little this costs in comparison to estimates from same types of companies in SD County!
If you would like have a referral to a good auto upholsterer in SD County, pm me and I may be able to help.
You can remove the bumper stickers with “Goo-Gone” and a single-edge razor knife or sharp scraper.
hint: After you get the interior redone and trunk relined, you don’t have to mention the dog’s mistake and the fmr mice nest in your craigslist ad :=]
Or maybe since it runs decent and has an authentic “5-spd overdrive” transmission, creechrr might take it off your hands and fix it up himself! These types of vehicles are hard to find today in your price range that run decent.
I drove a clutch up until ’92 and loved them. I kept trying to shift my Camry for over two years after that, lol :=0

ParticipantAwesome post, birmingplumb!
Any “labor-friendly” prosecutors would have a field day in my neck of the woods (which is <9 mi north of the int'l border). No one is minding the store here and that's the way the homeowners in SD County like it.
I can't tell you how many fantastically-talented "authentic" journey-level tradesman that I have known throughout life who, up to 20 years ago could make a decent living for their families in the trades under subcontractors but can now no longer even support themselves in this county in their chosen line of work so are working doing something else or “semi-retired” and doing “odd jobs.” Some are either collecting union pensions or are eligible for one but have not yet begun to collect it.
I believe all CA community colleges should re-emphasize the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) and bring back all programs and trades with a vengeance. There is absolutely NO REASON in this day and age for a young person to borrow $30K+++ to obtain an (overrated) bachelor’s degree when one can make $28+ per hour (w/benefits) as an apprentice HVAC technician … straight out of the gate after just 12-24 mos training to earn a certificate!
ROP is FREE to qualified low-income students and only $46 per semester hour to everyone else. There’s absolutely no excuse whatsoever not to have a way to make a living by age 20 if not pursuing a four-year degree.
