barnaby33ParticipantI’m in Mission Valley, the west end below USD. I never thought that my location was super humid. However the bathroom doesn’t have a window, it’s in the interior of the house. I did just add a new fan in the ceiling. Personally I think the cabinet was just defective. It was less than 1.5 years old and I always shower with the bathroom door open.

barnaby33ParticipantMeh should is the most dangerous word in the English language. Immigration was good. Not so much at this point, especially that of the illegal variety. Thinking that rising asset prices because of rising population is good, that’s how a virus reacts to it’s environment. No consideration of limits, but they exist.

barnaby33ParticipantImplicit in the bill is people driving less. Most people probably don’t think along those lines, but that will be the net effect. Instead of a plan, you could just raise gas taxes till electric cars makes sense.
1) People will drive less.
2) Electric cars will make more sense.
3) Living in out lying areas will become much more difficult.Josh
barnaby33ParticipantThat thread has people complaining about their rates more than doubling! I remember when I signed up in 97 they said rates could rise, slowly, but almost never do. I upgraded once to an Sport membership and so pay more but haven’t since then.
It looks like they can raise our rates 5% a year. It might be time to join the YMCA.

barnaby33ParticipantMost jobs, other than surgery, that pay well aren’t particularly hard. You are getting paid for having acquired the skills someone really needs, when they really need them. That and most others don’t have them.
Being a dev I’ve made choices about what to learn and never seriously considered the large SAP type systems for two reasons. I have no interest in being a road warrior and these skills require working in corporate type environments that I find painfully soul crushing. How many corn silk blue shirts do you want to own?

barnaby33ParticipantDeadzone, you can’t say that last line with a straight face. I’m a software engineer too. I have gone through my H1-b bating phase ten years ago when our economy contracted and I too couldn’t find a job.
Other than that one period however I’ve never had trouble finding a job at decent pay. Maybe not stellar but decent.
Adding supply to any pool can and usually does lower the negotiating power of that pools participants all things being equal. In the IT market which has always been boom bust things are not always equal.
Companies will always go where they get the most bang for buck. If they can hire Indians for 1/3 what they pay me (and they do) then the work goes to the Indians. However those who are smart enough find a way to parlay their skills into a visa to come here and earn more.
If companies could get away with only hiring cheap foreigners neither you nor I would have jobs. If we cut off all of that supply many companies will judge that it’s worth it to just move the entire IT function overseas.
There definitely is abuse of the system, all systems get abused. In my experience both humble and limited this one isn’t all that abused and it doesn’t lower wages very much. In exchange I get the pleasure of making fun of my Indian Muslim colleague and threatening him with the idea that management will send him back to Bombay to run a team of Hindus; priceless!

barnaby33Participantlifeisgood. Sounds like despite the many contrarian and well written points, you just have an axe to grind. You really aren’t interested in other points of view.
Thanks FLU, that was well written.

barnaby33ParticipantReal estate exceptionalism at its finest. Having spent a fair bit of time in OB, unless you are there to manage it, it is one hell of a risk. The types of people attracted to OB don’t provide the best applicant pool. Your friend is extremely lucky in timing.
Is anybody currently buying properties to rent, especially on the coast?

barnaby33ParticipantSeriously guys? This thread was about Qcomm cutting jobs. I believe the number was in the 4k range. Someone I know personally is a chip designer and very nervous about his near future.
Yeah yeah, some people teach, others don’t, different thread.
Josh
barnaby33ParticipantSounds pretty reasonable to me. Not stellar, but reasonable. As in I wouldn’t jump from another company for that salary, unless conditions were markedly better, but it certainly isn’t low.

barnaby33ParticipantSince this is the last thread on Solar I’ll ask here first. Does anybody know the about installing solar on a roof on a townhouse? My building is 3 units per structure, house-like but still a condo.
Josh
barnaby33ParticipantVinegar, is there anything it can’t do?
Josh
barnaby33ParticipantI agree. But what can we do… the article has already been written by someone who don’t understand statistics. It’s is CNN afterall. But regardless, it’s still good data. San Diego is growing at 1.5%. That’s pretty good.
Lot’s of things we can do! Sadly our inaction will force us down some ugly paths. Why is endless growth good again?

barnaby33ParticipantAs someone who has both traveled extensively and hosts Airbnb guests from other countries (currently 2 Italians) I couldn’t disagree more. Europeans actually travel less. Often I hear from them, especially when they are here, how their families and friends question their desires to travel. As in, “why would you go to America?” Plus most European countries host passport percentages about the same as the US. Now if you are referring to Germans going to Austria for the weekend, that is hardly traveling.
Ahh the fuzzy romantic notions we have of others.
