ParticipantThat prosper route is a good reccomendation.. I responded to an ad not too long ago on Craigslist for a Marine who needed $1000 to cover some expenses one of which was his car that was repo’d. I referred him to Prosper and let him know that if that didn’t work to contact me again – but he sent me a quick thanks for the Prosper recommendation and a couple question about how to get setup and I haven’t heard from him since! So I think it worked for him..
On Toyota.. how much better can a company do? It seems like everything they do is a win for the company and customers maybe I’m drinking the koolaid..(TM is up like 30%+ in last year). They are firing on all cylinders.. Toyota is just killing it with everything they do, with their FJ(stealing road raged women from Hummer) and their Tundra(owns every other truck in it’s class), Camry(seen the new body style??) and Prius etc etc… Even facing a recession I am still tempted to get back into Toyota stock…
I had an 05 Tacoma that I recently sold.. I used it for 2 years, and sold it for around 15% less than I bought it for NEW… it ended up costing ~$250 a month including sales tax and license to use the truck for 2 years. I wasn’t so fortunate when I sold my Ford a few years earlier, especially because I wasn’t willing to withhold any information about some of it’s expensive or time-bomb quirks!

ParticipantIsn’t it well understood that, bonds and stock markets outrank real estate in returns when averaged over 20-30+ years?
Assuming thats true for a minute – can we start off by looking at Mexico as more an inexpensive place to live than an needing investment strength? So at the very least you want a place to escape to that costs you little… is there anything affordable enough for your average person looking for an escape(someone with disposable income) from a lease perspective where investment returns don’t even matter? Say something that costs 100-500(without having a wild dog chew on your leg while your sleeping) a month? That you can go to anytime, any day, for as long as you want? Maybe its called a hotel… but why not lease a small place not worry about investment and take a $1000+/month that you’d spend to live anywhere else and stick it in a bond or something and let it do its thing..
I guess it’s smart to find max investment with smallest costs, duh.. but I’m just wondering if the costs(inc. upfront) in Mexico can be so low that investment considerations can be mostly excused?

ParticipantThat sucks.. I’ve seen craftsmanship like that before that really does remove all wind from any sail… so does this mean that for the house to sell, someones going to have to rip out the floor and replace it and any other eyesores? What kind of flipper will that be?
I still don’t see how the gov bails the people out, maybe the companies.. maybe that will be by creating some program that allows a person to convert their 30 into a 45 or 60 year? So the person ends up paying more, but the pain is distributed.. Don’t know, just don’t have much faith in the gov’s urgency to help the little guy after learning a little more about the promises/silent handshakes many politicians have to offer beforehand in order to get the funds to make it into office.. maybe I’m way off, I still do believe in the USA.. I do sense/hope that we’re approaching a time where a wave crumbles and from it comes a time less centered on money and more about family, community, integrity.

ParticipantDid you get into a car accident without insurance? How can there be such a large gap in what it’s worth and what you owe?
What are you looking to do? Maybe you can submit your car to pimp my ride.

ParticipantWhat a great read.. It’s refreshing to hear debate with such expressive and rich dialogue.. rarely do threads that start out the way this one did, end up recovering(oops maybe it hasn’t).
Message to dcarlos:
I know you rent a house in Scripps and have dogs, turtles etc. That was the best laugh I’ve had in a while.. Hopefully not at whoever it was about expense.. I like reading both SD REALTORS posts with space and without.. I guess it was just one of those things that jumped out when I hadn’t expected. I don’t know if you were trying to be funny, if it’s true, even if it is true – I like dogs and turtles.. You just seem to start firing off in every direction. Future dirt on me, I have a feed mouse that’s in a box in my room.. I’m taking good care of it, and I’m not sure if letting it go would be better or worse for its overall life quality..

ParticipantAnything in particular you want to know about? Ask away and if I know the answer I’ll tell you.
Thanks for the information.. I’m interested in checking it out on my next fishing trip. I guess being less traveled helps makes a place more desirable for the retiree or person wanting to enjoy different elements, at the same time – won’t most places become touristy as they become safe and have more money flowing in?
I guess I don’t even know what to ask.. How much can a person get a vacation house down there for in USD? Say 1 or 2 bedrooms, how about on and then near the beach general price.. Also, what would you say average age of retiree is down there?

ParticipantI used to work with a Ukranian guy and he claimed that lots of people emigrated over here from Russia and paid cash for their houses in Del Mar.. he was implying some corruption type money that was fleeced somewhere in Russia… is this relevant? Or are we just seeing people coming to work in Sorrento Valley filling skillsets that are in shortages here..

ParticipantI was thinking it was a marketing trick… I think the ad probably caught more eyes and even has it’s own thread because of it’s mispelling.. how that would translate into more business or confidence in their offering is another question!?
It’s the classic ‘I before E except after C’, though this one is mjuch easier to figure out than ‘chief’

ParticipantAnother snippet from the same paper a few days later.. I don’t have the full article unfortunately… and this clip doesn’t say much, but this talk in 1991 sounds similar to today.
