• Top of the Hayatt – for the views, not the drinks! Kids can go up there during the day.
• USS Midway Museum – kids love this stuff.
• Cabrillo National Monument
• Mission Beach Boardwalk
• The Cave Store cavestore.com in La Jolla. Most San Diego Natives don’t even know about this gem! Kid will feel like he’s searching for buried treasure in a pirate cave.

12 is an awesome age! Many 12 year olds are independent and cool, can have a decently intelligent conversation without being too adolescent “attitudish” or girl crazy – enjoy your visit! I like the idea of printing out this list and having him pick what he wants to do.(You might want to have a budget in mind when you give him options) Booggie boarding or surf lessons would totally make him a cool dude in his friends eyes when he goes back to Kansas. You might also want to take him up to the LA area to see Hollywood or go to Universal Studios.
