What do you guys think about Consumer Credit Counseling?

I understand that non-profit CCC agencies are funded by the credit card biz. Do they actually help people, is it ethical or just another way to keep people debt slaves and dependant on credit card usage? Would you work there if you were in the “helping profession” field? I’m just trying to get the full picture on this organization.

Good question. I’ve heard many times that the most those agencies can do is re-organize the payments into a single manageable one. In some cases they can get you a lower interest rate as well.

However if what you say is correct and the agencies are at least partially funded by the CC companies, well, then you know who they work for.

All credit counseling is are call centers pushing the status quo for people who are financially changed. I saw a 60 minutes peace, or something like that, on some a few years ago and they are a joke. Nobody was qualified to give any financial advice, they were high school grads with a script.

I know of(but don’t know) a woman who for a fee helps people settle delinquent debt at a discount and get their FICO scores up. A client I once had was referred to her by the mortgage broker involved. This is for profit. Not someone piggs would probably need but it could be a good job for someone trying to help less savvy people who otherwise are not going to get out from under their financial problems.
