Luckily, banks are prudent enough today to require such proof from independent, non-interested sources such as my employer and my bank. Because I think we all know what happened when banks took people at their word. But it simply will not do for me to assure a lender that I have worked at my company for 10 years and that I have plenty of cash in the bank. Understandably, they realize that not everyone can be trusted. When I applied to the CA bar they didn’t allow me to go home and fingerprint myself and send the prints in with my application. Instead, I was required to go to a police station and be fingerprinted, and they sent them directly to the Bar. These aren’t perfect analogies, I know, but I hope you’ll get the idea here.
