Turko Files mortgage “victim”

Another sob story about a woman — an ex-mortgage industry employee, no less — who doesn’t want to pay her mortgage, and thinks the bank is obligated to let her stay for free.

Turko never mentions whether or not she piled on debt via HELOCs and cash-out refis above and beyond the purchase price. Nor does he think it’s necessary to tell us when she last made a full mortgage payment (or any payment at all). What he does mention is that she “got rid of all her debt” by filing for bankruptcy, which only tells us that she’s willing to stiff all her creditors in order to get her mortgage lender to “modify” her mortgage.

Monday, December 21, 2009 – A real estate professional called KUSI’s Michael Turko when her mortgage modification deal never came through. Turko says she was in the mortgage industry herself, but now she’s about to lose her home.

When she lost her job and couldn’t pay her own mortgage she contacted her lender right away. She tried everything she could think of to work out a new deal, and says her lender kept promising they wouldn’t foreclose while they were still negotiating. But after spending endless hours on paperwork and phone calls, she got nowhere!

I understand how losing one’s job might qualify you for a short sale. But I don’t understand how it would qualify you for a mortgage modification. Short Sales are supposed to require hardship – and losing your job is a hardship. But you come out of it with NO HOUSE.

You need income in order to qualify for a loan or loan mod. If she’s lost her job and they can’t afford the mortgage with just her husband’s income how can she keep her house?

My friends who went through the short sale did so after the husband lost his job. (Wife is still employed) They were underwater AND took a huge income hit. But they didn’t try to keep a house they couldn’t afford anymore… they’ve joined the ranks of the renters.

This woman and her family should have pursued a short sale.

I don’t understand how people thing they should be able to keep a house they are not making payments on…
