Very timely news about doping in sports.
To me, it’s very similar to cheating in a marriage. People do it for advancement and self-benefit; and they don’t think they’ll get caught.

May 20, 2011 at 11:34 AM #697426njtosdParticipant

Society in general pushes for it.
That’s the key here. That’s why I say that marriage is coercive.
For social advancement you need to get married.

Name a single choice in anyone’s life that is independent of societal pressures. Your argument, if it were correct, would excuse just about any bad behavior. Society expects me, as a woman, to be fashionable. If I can’t pay for nice clothes or if I choose not to, by your argument I should be able to steal them. Society pressures people to get advanced degrees; if I get into a course of study that just takes up more time than I anticipated, your argument suggests that cheating is to be expected. etc.
Society IS coercive – that is why people respect honorable choices that are made when it would have been easier to have made a dishonorable one.

I’m not excusing the cheating. I’m just saying that it is what it is. We have no choice but to accept it and deal with it.
There used to be legal penalties for adultery. But it’s not a crime. It’s something to be worked out between the spouses and it’s nobody’s business.
There are still stiff social sanctions against adultery. But people are much more accepting of it now.
I’m also saying that people respect money, fame and power, and social advancement more than they respect remaining faithful in a marriage. Folks make the choice of getting married accordingly.
