If govt hadnt intervened prices would have been hit harder but I had every expectation they would do whatever they could to prevent a melt down. I’d say they have been pretty successful and it looks like they are winning the war to me. I also beleive while some areas would have been hit harder without gov’t intervention other areas would have been more insulated than others -this being one of them. Not free from problems but hit less hard than others.
To your previous comment is it not possible that one area will get more desireable relative to others? That over time areas will improve while others falter. Rome fell as did Detroit. No one cared about Texas until they found oil there. and yes SoCal has become more desireable relative to other parts of the country than it was previously.

These are not the reasons everyone cites when talking about how its different here. Sure the weather comes up but that is not the only thing and fortunately it is the other things that have changed. The weather was the main driver when tourism and defense were our only industries. Now we have developed other reasons why it is different here than before. SD is home to major industries in growing fields like health sciences, telecom and tech. Other cities are dying because they rely on heavy manufacturing which is moving overseas while SD is still growing. Major cities on the east coast are suffering population declines while SD is growing.

Yes, I also thought they would try to intervene, and spent many solid days and weeks writing letters, faxing, calling, and even attending public hearings in order to stop it well before the SHTF. Win some, lose some…I (and many others like me) lost that battle.
I think their tactics are misguided and will end up costing far more over the long term. Unfortunately, too many people are more concerned about the short term, so we’ll have to deal with the consequences of their short-sightedness when the time comes.
Cheers to you, sdr…until 2012. π
