Where I grew up 1 and 2 hour commutes each way many via public transportation are common and well accepted. It isnt really an issue of moving far away to get the house you want but rather the type of house you want isnt available so close to the cities.

May 24, 2007 at 1:27 PM #54812kewpParticipantHmm, Temecula is a nice area. If I could arrange telecommuting three days a week (currently do it one) and work flex time (say 7-3) the rest I might do it (provided good housing hits around 300k). Probably would buy a motorcycle just for the commuting days.
When I used to visit there is seemed an inordinate amount of folks were in RE related businesses (especially construction), so I can see the local economy getting hit pretty hard.

Or are you still trying to talk yourself into buying that house …

On the weekends, I’m outside wearing a t-shirt covered in paint mowing the lawn with a hand push mower in Carmel Valley. Maybe that’s why my neighbors hate me. But I guess it’s because I’m cheap and don’t want to pay $60 to hire a gardener to mow 5 feet of grass. (I don’t even have extended cable).”
Fat, are we brothers? I turned in my digital box because I didnt see a need to pay 7 more bucks a month. I am really cheap.
There are some great comments about the Temecula area. My take is this:
Temecula is the high desert to San Diego as Hesperia is to Inland Empire. Course Temecula is nicer but the values will drop far (I’m shocked no one disagrees about this area tanking). I am lucky because my wife will teach there as I will be right in the middle of my territory, San Diego, Orange, Riverside. It is cheaper and API schools are high (no clue for how long). I took a long azz drive through De luz all the way into Fallbrook today with my stero full blast like always. I never been to Fallbrook before. None of u’s are looking to buy there right? It looks to me like a ghetto version of Oceanside without the Ocean.May 24, 2007 at 4:25 PM #54901waiting hawkParticipant“Thanks for the info…Oops. On a big screen is a picture of a two-story house with a market value of $420,000″
“Two minutes later…House Auctioneer: Last call for 300,000, 290 now 3. Anyone else at $300,000? And I haaaaaaaaave sold that $290,000 subject to confirmation.”
“Savvy bargain-hunters can get quite a deal. At this auction, Regina Lane had the winning bid on a three-bedroom house near Palm Springs. It was valued at $399,000. She got it for 260,000.”
“Regina Lane: ‘It’s exciting. I just can’t wait to get into it, because I haven’t seen it. That’s the scary part.’”

May 24, 2007 at 4:35 PM #54891newguyParticipantI’m a bit confused. I read the article, and when I looked up the property that sold for $290,000 (with a market value of $420,000) on zillow, it says it was sold on 02/27/2007 for $355,673. Am I missing something?
And also, what are the auctions like in terms of fee’s etc?

The key words here are “via public transportation”. On a train, you can read a magazine, a book, relax, close your eyes, chat with the guy next to you, etc… Versus sitting by yourself in a deathtrap burning gasoline wondering if this will be the day you join the 50000 of your fellow Americans that die in auto accidents every year. Big difference. Driving is extremely stressful and dangerous, especially on a busy high-speed freeway like the 15. So many people are injured and killed every year, yet that’s rarely considered when someone signs themselves up for an hour commute.
