You pay taxes when you earn your money. It is bogus to tax the heck out of it again when you die. When you earn the money, you should have the right to pass it down to your heirs without a huge penalty. Down with the Robin Hood mentality. I would like to give my children a leg up if I can.

What if you get a big oil or rail concession because of corrupt government?
PD, do you think that the Rockerfellers and Vanderbilts honestly earned their money?
If you “earn” a certain portion of GDP, shouldn’t it be fair to contribute the same proportion back?

June 15, 2007 at 1:22 PM #59643AnonymousGuestPerry, why should heirs pay taxes on what their parents managed to save, after taxes? Think about your poor dogs, Perry; who will provide for their daily linen service if it all goes to the IRS?
You think that annual taxes on income and cashed in investments is not enough? You think that annual property taxes on homes, boats, and cars is not enough?
And you’re going to be the arbiter of who ‘honestly earned their money’? Have the producers of trash like ‘American Idol’ and ‘The OC’ honestly earned their money?
I guarantee that I’ll structure things such that my nice-sized estate won’t get ‘death taxed.’ Just as all the left-wing fat cats in Hollywood have done.

I’d say yes to both.
I agree that anyone who is going to get effected by inheritance tax (people who inherit in excess on $2m a year) will most likely persuade their benefactors to employ some bogus corporate structure to evade those taxes.

June 15, 2007 at 10:36 PM #59749PerryChaseParticipantThe law is the law and it’s perfectly legitimate for individuals to shelter their money. Nothing wrong with Hollywood stars or other well-to-do individuals sheltering their money. I would do the same.
From what’s best for society, my ideals are those who own the largest portion of the wealth (that society generates) also pay the largest portion of the taxes (contributions to society). The estate tax is a wealth tax and that’s fair in my view. We should mend it not end it.
I also agree that _American Idol_ and _The OC_ are trash.
