Be careful of what you wish for! I really hope San Diego does NOT become like the Bay Area recently — “good” parts of the Bay Area have turned into a gridlocked, overpriced, pretentious mess. LESS job creation would actually do the Bay Area a lot of good. When I was in SF in September of last year, it took me FIVE HOURS. FIVE. HOURS. to get out of the city to the north.
I’d rather San Diego stay like a big Santa Cruz to L.A.’s Bay Area.
I don’t want SD to be exactly like Bay Area. But SD can take lessons learned from Bay Area and have proper public transit and limit the area of major job centers. So that it allow public transit to work better.

I think your wife is an RN? The Northern Cali Kaiser RN’s scored a 14% raise over 3 years in the latest contract.
I actually don’t mind the sunshine tax.
I’m pretty sure the NoCal Kaiser RN union area able to negotiate that because the cost of living has risen through the roof. Something tells me that if cost of living didn’t rise like they did, the union won’t be able to negotiate that kind of pay raise. Unlike tech, RN can move anywhere, as long as there are people, there will be a demand. So, if the hospital don’t pay up and cost of living keep on rising, RN will pick up an leave for greener pastures.March 25, 2015 at 12:05 PM #784159poorgradstudentParticipant“San Diego and Virginia Beach-Norfolk have large military presences, so reductions in defense spending could be limiting job growth in those areas.”
March 25, 2015 at 12:54 PM #784161fun4vnay2ParticipantMy friends’ local companies ( 3 companies ) moved out of san diego to Dallas TX
My other friend working in Toyota mentioned me that Toyota is also moving out of Irvine to Plano/TX..March 25, 2015 at 1:25 PM #784162The-ShovelerParticipantWell so far has not seemed to slow down the RE market in north county.
March 25, 2015 at 2:20 PM #784163fun4vnay2ParticipantYeah, you are right. Let’s see how long the party goes on.

“Proper public transit” and “Bay Area” in the same sentence? Haha. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaha. (Going to wipe coffee off my screen now.)

Just because we want growth does not mean we have to settle for the same mistake they made. You really need to improve your reading comprehension. I never said bay area have proper public transit.

Haha… I talk to a good friend about this all the time. I actually resigned myself to never see “proper” transit in America in my lifetime. What I would consider “decent” is not even going to happen. It’s as hopeless as hopeless gets.
The problem is that, by and large, Americans have never seen decent public transit so there’s no political support. The car culture is what we have and people would rather keep it, at the cost of a lot of wasted time on the road.
I’m hoping for a Google transportation pod.
March 25, 2015 at 4:23 PM #784170The-ShovelerParticipantSelf driving cars come close to great for me,
So I can keep my three car garage in the exburb’s and keep going to Costco to fill it to the gills.
I saw this today and said to myself, this guy just described L.A.
That’s great if you don’t mind being by yourself all the time.
I think that the car culture is dehumanizing and disconnects us from serendipitous human encounters. It sucks to me. But if you like it, all the more power to you!
March 25, 2015 at 4:33 PM #784175The-ShovelerParticipantTry being married with a family. Getting a little alone time is not such a bad thing.
March 25, 2015 at 4:52 PM #784177spdrunParticipantIf anything, random contact with other (non-work) people when you have a family is more important. Otherwise, your world will become very closed. They say that marriages with affairs actually last longer 🙂
I like the French and Italian philosophy that doesn’t require married couples to spend every waking hour either alone, at work, or with each other.
As far as self-driving cars, the problem is reasonably simple on a freeway in clear conditions. The problem becomes a good deal less simple in any sort of semi-urban environment with pedestrians, cyclists, etc. A lot of negotiation of right of way is done via eye contact, gestures, etc, and having a self-driving car that will play nice with other traffic isn’t trivial.
