The Bay Area rental market is very tight and very expensive; however, for a shared room, she’ll have no trouble finding one…. in August, not in May! Right now you have the summer sublets coming on, then in July-Aug, you’ll begin to see the back to school shares.
First, Craigslist is the only game in town. There is no point looking at anything else for Oakland/Berkeley.
Second,While Walnut Creek is safe, it’s also not exactly fun.
Try Rockridge, North Berkeley, etc. They are safeish (not perfect) but more entertaining. Plenty of shares. Finally, get used to the questions. People here expect some degree of communitarianism in rentals and finding out the person’s likes/dislikes/habits is really important – and very standard.
Also FYI, there is no medical school in Oakland – or Berkeley for that matter I assume you mean she is doing residency at either Oakland Children’s or Kaiser? Or something else? If Oakland Kaiser, try Piedmont (reasonably safe, cute, etc). If Oakland Children’s try Rockridge.

Thanks. I guess we’ll have to wait till August. There IS a medical college for nurses, Samuel Merritt. That’s where she’s going. http://www.samuelmerritt.edu/
