Amazon to build distribution center near Tracy

Mayor thrilled at a 1000 jobs being created.

Granted, they’ll pay $11/hr.

And probably need extra paramedics…

Tracy will welcome Amazon into the fold. Jobs paying an avg of $11 hr are fine as they will involve no commute in a city that is its own epicenter of foreclosures … for good reason. They are a back bedroom of Livermore which is a back bedroom of Oakland. Average commuting time from Tracy to OAK almost ANY time of day is undoubtedly ~1.75 hrs (barring any accidents).

Hooray for them and maybe this means we consumers in SD will get our orders in a more timely manner!

I totally agree it’s so convenient. Last year I tried the Amazon Prime where you pay less than $99 and you get unlimited free 2 day shipping.

It’s hard to believe they can make money with people that get very low cost items delivered all the time.

It’s so darn easy to order stuff and many times they overnight things vs. 2 day shipping and it’s totally free. Like yesterday the tire pressure light went on in my SUV. I ordered a $10 tire pressure gauge and it is arriving tomorrow. No shipping.

I order tons of smaller items and can’t beat not having to drive to the store to pick it up. Amazon just makes it too easy. Especially with the Amazon Prime Membership and the free 2 day shipping.

Prices on Prime items are higher, to cover the shipping cost. Amazon isn’t stupid. I use prime extensively, but it’s a chimera, when considering price.

Since Amazon already has distribution centers here was the OP being glib when they linked a new center to tax collection?

Ninaprincess, they are still cheaper in most cases than anyone else. Even with tax.

barnaby, Amazon is obviously building its distribution centers in CA on the cheapest land they can get … which makes sense (to hold their prices down). Any “beleaguered area” in the “armpit” of CA with 50%++ of distressed properties would be thrilled to have a new employer move in, offering the locals 750-1000 new jobs.

As it should be. If that’s the deal they made with Jerry, then so be it. Imagine how much sales tax the (small) state of TN collects (from their own residents and a poss % of other states) with all those online distribution centers located within minutes from the one of the country’s main UPS shipping hubs!

I’m a little confused by parts of this, so I’ll just add the way it works and move on from there. An Amazon distribution center does generate sales tax revenue for the state in which it’s located, to the extent that distribution center ships within the state. Products shipped out of state don’t create sales tax revenue for the local state. So Tennessee doesn’t get sales tax for stuff shipped from the local Amazon distribution center to another state.

But irrespective of that, Amazon has in place agreements with at least 8 states that it already charges sales tax for all deliveries within those states, regardless of where the products are shipped from. California and Tennessee among them. There’s another handful of states it has agreements to do so in the future.
