As I read it, that simply means you can’t advertise for those specific traits. I can choose anyone I like, and base that choice on any trait I want. There’s no reason for anyone to know why I chose that person.

Yes, for roommates/housemates, only discriminatory advertizing is illegal.
And if you share a bathroom or kitchen, you may advertize a sex preference.
Craigslist has a good FAQ:

So next time I’m looking for a housemate, I’ll keep an open mind. I maybe more careful, and come up with an excuse to visit my prospective housemate’s home to ascertain his/her health and lifestyle standards before approving the housemate. That’s still some time in the future because my current housemate plans to stay for 5 years. Maybe, I’ll then be more established with a network of friends; and I’ll find a replacement by word-of-mouth.
