OT – A Question About Checkout Line Etiquette

Take if you will a brief vacation from the weighty economic matters of the world, to consider the following grocery store scenario:

A man and his teenage son are in the checkout line at a grocery store, with several people in line behind them. As the line slowly moves forward, the son suddenly thinks of something and dashes off into the back of the store. As the dad’s stuff reaches the clerk and the clerk begins ringing it up, the son returns and drops two boxes of candy at the tail end of the dad’s groceries.

The clerk asks, “are these all together?” The son says “no, they’re separate.” And the clerk rings him up separately, in front of the woman who was behind them in line.

Do you think that:

1) The teenager cheated, taking a place in line in front of other people;
2) The teenager didn’t cheat, exactly, but he “shaded the letter of the law” (or custom, in this case);
3) What the teenager did was perfectly innocent and OK?

I think it is forgiveable given the greater inconvenience sending him to the end of the line of full carts and separating him from his father who is actually ready to leave.

I don’t see anything wrong with this situation. It’s not like the teen made everyone wait and hold up the line while he went to get this candy. As long as the line keeps on moving, his dad is essentially saving his spot for him while he go grab what he forgot to get. He did get in line before everyone else in that line.
