Panel recommends raise for mayor and council

I ask why and how. We have a budget deficit. Is it now okay when people do a crappy job and screw us that they get bonus and raises?

We have infrastructure falling apart, sewer main breaks, potholes in streets big enough to devour motorcycles, layoffs, furloughs, all b/c the City has no money, but now they’re getting raises? WTH!

Who are these people on the Salary Setting Commission and are they completely clueless?

“commission’s president, noted that elected officials haven’t had a raise since 2003”

Guess what, police haven’t gotten a cost of living raise since 2000. That’s when in lieu of raises the City agree to put more money in their pension – which they didn’t, which lead to the pension fiasco and ultimately revocation of that whole deal, which meant no raise (though they did get a small raise, but hardly commensurate w/COL). City workers recently took a 6% pay cut

“At current salary levels, all well-qualified candidates must either have independent sources of income, or be willing to live on an income far below what their skills and experience would likely command in the market place”

That’s what happens when you don’t work in the private sector.

Shall we not include as income what they get in side deals under the table? (always skeptical)

And this is aggravating: “a growing number of city workers — 3,431 — earn more than an individual council member.”

How long exactly have these city workers been earning more than council members? I doubt it’s some new hire. If that’s the reason, maybe when they serve as long as some of these other city workers, they can receive higher income.

This just frustrates the hell out of me. We just got rid of police horses, dogs and boats to save 250k a year. We lost 200k hosting the PGA and now they deserve a raise.

In addition, when the commision did this evaluation, they considered San Diego’s Cost of Living. If raises were based on COL, everyone here is entitled to a raise.

They need salaries high enough to attract qualified candidates? Is San Diego such an undesireable City that we couldn’t attract a qualified person?

Basing salaries on comparable California cities should not be considered. I’m sure there are many other city workers who could make more money in, say, Fresno.

They compared the salaries to Police Chief and Fire Chief. Is that comparing apples to apples? Exactly how many years have the Police Chief and Fire Chief served before they got in the positions they were in?

Basing salary on heavy responsibilities. If one feels the job has too many responsibilities for the salary, why run for the job in the first place.

Seriously, this would be tolerable if the City’s finances were thriving, but I think this is just unacceptable now.
