As a Christian who is also an attorney, I found myself rolling my eyes too many times at some of the ridiculous postings concerning religion on this board. In response, here are three quick points, though I can’t waste an entire day responding to all the hyperbole and misrepresentations:
1. The Founding Fathers, en masse, would have been outraged to see the purported arguments for removing all religion from government bodies and activities. People who say the was the original intent of the founders was to remove religioun from government lack common sense, have not researched the issue fairly, are liars–or some combination of these. If there was any concern about the influence of religion, it was only focused with the demoninational influences of one sect over the other, i.e Congregationalists over Quakers. Moreover, the application of the First Amendment to the states was only made possible through the 14th Amendment and its incorporation of the Bill of Rights at the state level. This was years after the ratification of the Constitution and after the Civil War. Finally, it would take another 100 years of liberal courts improperly applying this prohibition to the states to get us to where we are now (remember it says CONGRESS shall make no laws–not California–respecting the establishment of religion), which is nearly a complete prohibition. In sum, this doctrine is an invention of liberal activits courts. The founding fathers, if alive, would likely call for a Constitution Convention to remedy this action or actively support a violent overthrow of the courts.
2. The hyperbolic statements about Christians on this board and the need to separate their beliefs from goverment are backward. As a general rule, the more governments have sought to remove Christianity, the more they have become autocratic, centralized, totalitarian, and embraced killing to further their political ends. As evidence, here is a book documenting that over 100 million people have been killed by secular communist and socialists governments:
3. Finally, as we march on to our secular, utopian paradise, think you will avoid the record of these governments, that we’ll not end up like the rest? Well, it is too late. Millions are already dead. By removing Christianity from the schools and the teaching of traditional moral virtues, we have helped decimiate the inner cities, making them areas of high poverty, kids born to unwed mothers, and devasting crime. Because we have removed religious teachings from schools and the left has ridiculed traditional values, how many young children have been born without fathers, facing a life of no educational or economic opportunity? How many will be lost to drug addiction, gangs, and die at an early age because of the impact of poverty? Oh, there’s this thing called abortion, too.
This will spread to the middle class. The left will seek to stop the spread of these ills by throwing billions of dollars at the poor with new government programs(though they are creating much of the problem to begin with) and we’ll make the dollar worthless, reduce our economic edge internationally, and many of our citizens will live a life that is nasty, brutal, and short.
So, in conclusion, be careful what you wish for, you might get it.
