realtors have easy access to an online site with the lending/lien history but it is very summary oriented. For example, if there is a HELOC you dont know how much if any is drawn on it. We also have access to title companies that can provide the details to us.

As sdr pointed out having access to title companies is a great benefit. However yes you can view all recordings against any property for free at the assessors office. It is a good thing to get used to doing.
