In the South County malls, it’s people from MX buying the exp. bags and shoes. When there’s a big sale, they buy them by the dozens, i.e. Macy’s five-hour clearance – 95% Baja plates in the parking lot.
Most can’t get American credit cards and are cash buyers.
Remember, folks who live there have A LOT more discretionary income than we do as the living exp. in MX is MUCH cheaper than SD and they still work here – read Sentri pass. I know many Americans that have one, and several who live there and work here. Not all work in low-wage jobs at hotels and restaurants as is the common misconception. Some are lawyers, accountants and dentists, etc.

May 18, 2010 at 7:50 PM #551577bearishgurlParticipant
bearishgurl, I also looked over your description of 92121. FYI, I know this area very well. I used to live in 92121. Lot size for these houses are mostly around 5000-7000 sq-ft w/ a few canyon view lot that have a bigger backyard, but none of them get much bigger than 1/4 acre. They are all built in the mid to late 90s. 92121 goes to 92126 schools. Which I hope you know that when you mention it has decent schools. There’s a couple condo complex near UCSD, but those are old and is on the very edge of 92121. The main townhouse complex in 92121 is called Wateridge and it’s surrounded by tech companies (mainly QCOM). . .
AN, see the (re)posts below:
92122 includes south UC – which is 90% SFR on larger lots. 92122 is schizophrenic – north UC (north of Rose Canyon is mostly high density condos, south UC (north of 52, but south of Rose Canyon) only has 2 apartment/condo developments – the rest is SFRs.

Thanks for the clarification, UCGal. I did not consult a map. I was unaware that 92122 encompassed any of UC. I would have thought Rose Cyn. to be 92110/92117.
I know 92122 encompasses a lot of older, roomier complexes w/3 story condos as well. I’ve been in some of them and they are very nice, with oversized garages and full amenities.
AN, I mixed up 92121 and 92122 in my thread-starter. I represented 92121 as UC when it is actually in 92122. The “roomier complexes” I am referring to are behind LJ Village Square. There may only be two or three complexes but they are large, with large units, built around ’79 to ’80. I do NOT know what zip code they are in (92122?). I remember LJ Colony as being in 92121, which is extremely dense. 92122 (UC) feeds in to Standley Middle and UC High. These are decent schools.May 18, 2010 at 7:50 PM #551684bearishgurlParticipant
bearishgurl, I also looked over your description of 92121. FYI, I know this area very well. This is an interesting question… one I’ve been googling (during code build times) over the course of the day.

We do not have the end of the paycheck stress. You know the panic, when you pay the bills trying to figure out which one to pay late because there’s not enough paycheck to cover the expenses. We have enough money to save for retirement. Part of this is because we’re frugal (cheap!)… kids clothes are hand me downs or come from target – not Gymbo or Gap… We have a nice house we can comfortably afford, but not a McMansion. My husbands truck is 15 years old, mine is 5 years old, both are paid for and will be driven till they fall apart. The kids don’t get every toy they ask for (or even 1/10th). We don’t have hired help (no garden service, maid service, etc.) But we are without financial stress and can make our bills and save. That’s why I’m comfortable saying we’re upper middle class.
How old are the kids? Naartjie, PumpkinPatch and Children’s Place on clearance have better deals than Target. Subscribing to Children’s Place newletter might be good idea. You just need to be willing to purchase Spring clothes in Fall and vice-versa.
+1
UCGal…You really should consider shopping on Gymboree online. I’ve been able to find really fashionable stuff that are slightly out of style for less than what you could find on sale at Target. There were these deals for tops and pants that were $6 on gymbo.
Just gotta know where and when to shop…Also, good place for good shoes at discounts are endless.com or zappos.com
usually with free next day shipping, no sales tax, and free return shipping.May 18, 2010 at 8:03 PM #551689CoronitaParticipant
