Another good argument against those promoting the “reconquista” of the Southern US.
January 9, 2007 at 3:33 PM #43074PerryChaseParticipantOverall a win for the USofA. We want well to do foreigners to come and live here.
January 9, 2007 at 3:47 PM #43076sdnativesonParticipantAll are welcome when they come legally, integrate into our society, and come to learn and respect the laws and culture of their new home.
January 9, 2007 at 7:16 PM #43089AnonymousGuestCertainly most of these wealthy Mexicans who move to Chula Vista are not living here legally. However, if they have money and are not getting benefits from the government that is fine for everybody I guess.
My question is if they are truly wealthy, why would they want to live in a craphole like Chula Vista? I guess the answer is most of them have business in Tijuana so it is the best choice within short distance to the border.
January 9, 2007 at 7:44 PM #43095sdnativesonParticipantI’ve been told that there are some really nice areas in Chula Vista, still, when I hear “wealthy” or “well to do” and Chula Vista I always default to the Bonita area. I imagine it’s a combination of proximity to the border and still cheaper than Coronado, Downtown or La Jolla.
January 9, 2007 at 10:51 PM #43106nlaParticipantdeadzone: Have you ever been to Eastern Chula Vista, specifically Eastlake Woods? That area has a lot of big and gated mansions? It’s not exactly a “craphole”.
sdnativeson: You’re talking about Eastern Chula Vista (91913, 91914 and 91915 zip codes), which is adjacent to Bonita. According to SANDAG, zip codes 91914 and 91915 have even higher median household income than Bonita (91902). Zip codes 91914 and 91915 has $98,985 and $100,990 respectively while Bonita has $93,118.
January 9, 2007 at 11:25 PM #43109bubble_contagionParticipantJust last week the Federal Police (similar to the FBI) disarmed the local Tijuana police because corruption and bribes from drug dealers have reached all government institutions. During Fox administration (2000-2006) 9,000 people were murdered in drug related executions. This is a higher per day average than U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq.
Wealthy businessmen, politicians and maybe even some drug dealers are sending their families to the U.S. for safety. Chula Vista for them is a paradise compared to Tijuana. Not all of them will relocate to Chula Vista, some can afford places like La Jolla. Most of these people will have legal or semi-legal status (tourist visa). I see this as a phenomenon that will be on the increase, rich people from Latin America fleeing to the U.S. as crime in their countries escalates. Lax immigration laws make this very easy for wealthy people. The free market economy that started with NAFTA has created a huge wealth for some people in Mexico (Carlos Slim, the third richest person in the world is Mexican). Assertive macroeconomic policies have also created a strong Peso and a low risk level for investing in the country. But even though Mexico is now a safe and profitable place to invest your money (the Mexican stock market has done terrific in the last years), crime is rampant in most of the country and it is not a safe place to live.
January 10, 2007 at 7:34 PM #43176AnonymousGuestEastern Chula Vista is just an overpriced craphole. It is out in the middle of nowhere, nothing to do, far from the beach, and a NASTY commute if you want to get to work. Let the Mexicans have it.
January 11, 2007 at 10:16 AM #43225daney143ParticipantChula Vista is the La Joya of TJ. It’s not that bad of a place to live. But it is far from the Beach. Outside of that, it’s the same there as it is everywhere in the US now. It has all the big box retail, food, stores and but it does have hot latin ladies… The cost to live there is a joke. You have Melaroos and HOA fees on top of a house that looks just like the neighbors. O yeah, there are a million day-care providers that are super cheap.
The most eastern portion of CV is only 17 miles from Downtown SD, which is closer than Poway and Carmel Valley, where you can find new homes. But it takes about 50-mins to drive into downtown and about 45-min to take the bus to the trolley into downtown.. Plus they have some pretty cool Mass transit lines planned to serve the median of E. Palomar and the I-805 to Downtown, Kearny Mesa, UTC and Sorrento Mesa. http://www.SANDAG.com The commute to TJ isn’t bad either if you like Mexian food or industry..
You’ll find a lot of Koreans living in Chula Vista too because the manage the Maq factories in TJ.
Because of the huge cultural blend of people down there, there isn’t that since of community. I lived there for 4 years and never really got to know any of my neighbors. I’ve lived where I am at now for two months an know everyone on the street. In other words, if your not mexican and you are white, forget about having any kind of social life down there quickly.
