A little known part of the recent medical health care bill, if I have been told correctly,is a provision that would limit health insurance companies overhead to 15% of sales, not the current 60% average. This, with the low penalties for no insurance and the elimination of pre-excisting conditions means that as health insurance premiums rise to cover the latter condition, more people will not get insurance, pay the penalty and once they get cancer, get insurance for it (since they cannot be denied). Insurance companies anticipate premiums to rise 200 to 300% in january. Limiting overhead to 15% with these other situations may mean that it is almost impossible to survive as an insurance company. The feds can then step in and offer health insurance as a one payer model. Is this the plan all along?

this is an interesting thought. Why would i want to buy insurance until i actually need it if I cannot be denied for a pre-existing condition and the penalty payment is cheaper than the insurance?

Maybe I misread, but I understood that while children can’t be denied for pre-existing conditions, adults can. There’s supposed to be a high-risk pool for adults with pre-existing conditions, so if we do see people gaming the system, the cost of the high risk policies could go way up, even if they’re non-profit pools. Can anyone confirm or deny that?

Also, if the high-risk pools have any kind of waiting period, you could go from treatable to fatal cancer while you wait. I don’t know that a couple thousand a year in savings is worth that risk
