fat: doesn't sound strange at all. like the chargers, they're our team as long as they're winning…
Some cultural things. One thing to watch out for is if your spouse and her relatives talk a lot about "money". It's an indication of how tight the family financial knot is.
Example: when my in-laws our her, they always refer to my wife and I's house as "our" house (meaning me, wife,wife-'s inlaw). When a stock is making money it's also "our" stock. A sucker stock is "my stock" though. It's really irritating. My parents (god bless them) have been westernized thankfully and don't do this.

Gotcha and agreed about the over consumption. Heartily agree… Unfortunately though it is everyday products that we all very much rely on that are now pretty much not made here anymore. Not sure if there is a real solution or not.

if I’m not mistaken, the japanese interest rate is very very low for more than a decade … approaching to 0% which i assume intentionally being designed to attract many foreign countries to borrow money while preserving the central financial systems there.
This strategy could happen to US soon and I don’t see no big issue for the average consumers anyway since they get a chance to keep their overvalued home at a flat level instead of drop like a stone instantly, as long as they can pay their monthly mortgage to the bank regularly.
I think the average consumers will do the same thing that they did in the past which is saving their incomes to house and stock markets, which should be just fine. This could be a win win situation for both the Main Street and the Wall Street.

The truh is our technological, scientific, and medical innovations (to name just a few) have never been better!
Our higher learning institutions are some of the best in the world, our routers and network gear cross the globe, our air planes and space vehicles (don’t just look at what’s available now, look at what’s in the works) are the best in the world. Tesla motors is the biggest innovators in electric cars. Apple has sold over 100 Million iPods (think all those went to US consumers?) and now whiplashed the cell phone industry (and that is the top of the iceberg, their design expertise will soon make it into other areas such as controls for air conditioning systems, art, furniture, to name a few). Intuitive Surgical makes state of the art operating room equipment the likes the world drools over. Boeing (as mentioned earlier) is kicking Airbuss buttocks left and right, and so what if much of its manufacturing is outsourced, the BRAINS and CREATIVE TALENT of the industry is what is important. When people need major surgery (heart transplant, brain surgery) they come to Loma Linda, California (and plenty of other fine US medical institutions).
Don’t even get me started on entertainment, GIS, military technology, industrial engineering…
I’m not trying to sound overly proud, although I damn well should be, but quite honestly stop all this America bashing already! Be proud of where you live and give some credit to those who work their asses off to make your lives easier every single day!
Made in China is just another US innovation, why make it for $1 when you can make it for $0.10! The creative genious is what drives the world in a technological revolution, and the last time I checked we were smack in the middle of one.

I don't have a problem with people complaining about made in china per se. I just have a problem with the hypocracy. Folks try to buy the cheapest things and then complain about having their jobs outsourced. There are clear alternatives
1) buy something made here and pay more.
2) do without the thing.
Less food, shelter, transportation, there really isn't anything that a person really "needs".
What to talk about patriotism, buy a Craftsman socket set at $20-$30 instead dof the made in PRC equivalent from walmart at $5. I generally do this because generally you do get what you pay for in terms of quality.
When you go to vons, buy TreeTop applejuice (made in seattle with apples in U.S.) instead of the Vons/Safeway brand (made from apples in china) or Motts (made from apples from Mexico). It will cost $1 more. (personally, buying food from china imho is gross, avoid it if you can).
