$500k and 33years old, when is enough enough?

How cheaply can one live on a yearly basis?

House paid off, 2 kids, no “real” job, and all the time in the world is what I’m pondering. Could $15k a year do it? Could $30k a year work? Running some quick #’s I figure the average SD Family incomes of 4 is in the $60k range. After taxes, that’s $35-40k in take home pay. Minus $1600 a month for rent, and that leaves most families living on 15,800-20k a year? Are my numbers too far off? (I’m thinking $15k is peanuts if you don’t have to pay taxes, and at this level you’d be at the poverty line and NOT paying taxes).

I could blow my wad on a $300-500k house here in San Diego were I grew up, or I could leave the state and buy a home for <$100k, like some of my peers have done, And not worry about my regular 9-5. I could work part time at joe's barber shop sweeping the floors and feed the family on $15K? The caveat is I would be leaving a $150K a year on the table during the best earning season of most peoples lifes... our 30-40's. (Frankly I think I can do better on my own, outside of a 9-5, given time, but that's another thread for another day about our "real" earning potential if all we had is time). Is the $400K, to Half a Million dollar price of admission really worth staying in San Diego?

You can rent to avoid that price tag.

I assume my cost of living for one person is $60K+ per year. I live frugally, but in the middle class.
