zk: I would offer two thoughts for consideration. First, and specific to California and more generally the US as a whole: We’re now seeing the fallout from several decades of vote buying, and by both parties. The GOP has focused on Big Business, Big Money and Big Oil and the Dems have focused on unions and organized labor and minorities. Both parties have pandered to their base and have been co-opted by their more reactionary and radicalized elements, thus the parlous state of dialogue and discourse in this country.
I’d agree with all of that.
The other thought is that our politicians are venal, corrupt and fairly worthless, and what does that say about us as a populace?
I think it says we’re gullible, short sighted, and not too bright.
This thread illustrates what Rich was referring to when he decried “Left versus Right slapfighting”. We’ve become so used to ad hominem and demonizing our “opponents”, that we’ve lost sight of the bigger picture and the ability to work as a consensus.
Actually, if you read this whole thread, there is very little left vs. right slapfighting. Aside from Brutus and djshakes, there was almost none. Which is pretty amazing, because what you say is completely true. There doesn’t seem to be even a desire to work toward a consensus or, in the case of politicians, to work toward actually governing the country. The only goal seems to be to score points against the other side. Vote buying may be a major component of the problems we’ve faced to date, but the problem of point scoring overtaking governing as the main goal of politicians threatens to be just as big a problem in the future.

It’s unfortunate that the noisiest participants in the American debate today are the least thoughtful. Generally those on either far end of the political spectrum lack the ability to appreciate the complexity, difficulty, subtlety and nuance required to actually make a country or a state work. They have a mantra (“Small Government!” or “We need to help the underprivileged! It’s not their fault!” or whatever) and nothing that doesn’t fit squarely with that motto is accepted, whether it’s what’s required or not. And it’s easy for them to rant and rave because it’s easy to shout slogans and to insult people. But doing what it takes to actually make something work? Leave those hard decisions to the few good politicians we have and then insult them when they try.
I expect it (or at least I should) from participants on a web forum. What’s really unfortunate is that, in far too many cases, our politicians are the same way.

Participant
I love it. Lefties run the state into the hole and then when criticized bark “why don’t you tell us how to fix it then, huh” as if it is our problem. They will never admit “yeah…our policies f’d stuff up”.
I’m sorry that people can’t come up with a quick response as to how to fix this colossal problem you have got us into over the years. You have dug the hole so deep with limited options out it is pretty much a trick question. I applaud your bailout mentality and unwillingness to accept responsibility though. However, years of liberal policies and government have gotten us into this situation……live with it. The state can burn for all I care. Maybe others would wake up. I’m willing to have it be a sacrificial lamb.

Lefties run the state into the hole…
You assume I’m a “lefty.” You’re wrong.

I wasn’t criticized by anyone, but if there’s something you’d like to say, I’m listening.

If you live in California, it is your problem.
They will never admit ‘yeah…our policies f’d stuff up’.
That I agree with. Except you left something out. It’s not just the left. Neither side will step up and say that. The right blames the state of the economy on Obama, when it was Bush and the Republican congress who (in large part) destroyed it. Both sides are incapable of accepting blame.
At this point, however, blame is irrelevant. There’s a huge problem that needs to be fixed.
I’m sorry that people can’t come up with a quick response as to how to fix this colossal problem…
My point is if they have no ideas on how to fix it, they shouldn’t be blaming our first fiscally responsible governor in decades for actually trying to do something that will actually fix the budget problem. Bitch, bitch, bitch, but no ideas. Lame.

My what!? Anyone can see that you made that up out of thin air. You should avoid doing such things if you want any credibility.
However, years of liberal policies and government have gotten us into this situation…
I think that’s mostly true. I also think fiscal irresponsibility is rampant on both sides of the aisle.
…live with it
Why would I do that? Why would I not want to see it fixed?
The state can burn for all I care.
I’d guess that you don’t mean that, in which case I can’t see why you’d say it. (If you do mean it, then you desperately need professional psychiatric care).

Participant
Here’s how to find the problem with California’s budget: Wait until the state goes completely broke, beyond the level where the Gummint can bail Cali out. When the riots begin, the people doing the rioting will be the ones that caused the problem (plus their political pals — who can easily be voted out).
Now that I’ve identified the problem, it’s up to you natives to do something about it such as: jail every rioter with US citizenship and deport everyone without US citizenship. Problem solved!!!!
And by the way, California WILL eventually go broke and I will do my best to encourage Pols NOT to bail California out. Or New York. Or any other state including my own.
When California was a Conservative state it didn’t have these problems much, but now it’s a state full of Bleeding-heart, left-wing lunatics, leftovers from the hippy days who have taken over and are driving the state into the poor house.
Here’s an idea: TAX wealthy Hollywood filmmakers, producers, and actors at 90%!!!! Start with Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Spielberg, Lucas, et al.
Allright, Brutus, I’ll give you the same challenge I gave faterikcartman.
What would you do, exactly, Brutus, to fix the budget?
Here’s a little something to get you started:

I have a prediction, Brutus. You’ll either ignore this, like faterikcartman did. Or you’ll rant and rave about lefty this and lefty that. But you won’t have any real, constructive ideas.
Prove me wrong, Brutus, if you can.
