ParticipantThe best scenario would be for the government to stay out of things, and to let the markets do what they need to do. That would return prices to where they are valued by the market, and would greatly discourage people from participating in a future bubble like the one we are witnessing pop. It might be unpleasant medicine, but it would be far better in the long run.
However, I can pretty much guarantee that won’t happen. Of course what will happen is a constant flow of government bailouts, either to investment banks as loans, or to joe6pack in the form of stimulus checks. Mix with that a healthy dose of inflation (does anyone seriously believe the government reported figures of only 2-3%?)
As to what’s the best we can hope for? Personally, I think it would be for those investing money in the US to get a clue as to how bad their investments are turning out and to do something about it.
Ironically, that might be starting to happen. A while back a Saudi oil minister was quoted as saying that for every percent the dollar fell, oil prices had to rise by $5. I’ve started to wonder if OPEC isn’t quietly telling Bush and Paulson behind doors that if they don’t stop the dollar’s decline, the oil countries are going to make them pay. This would explain a number of recent comments by fed officials and others about stopping lowering interest rates. Of course I could be all wet, and in desperate need of removing my tin foil hat.
Just my thoughts,

ParticipantWhat seems interesting to me is that agents are starting to get it. If you want to make a sale (and a commission) you better price the property aggressively. Now if the agents in La Jolla would just come to this simple realization. (One can always hope can’t they?)

ParticipantWhile this article may be about extreme cases of shallow materialistic people, I suspect that many not so shallow people will have real problems adjusting to their financial situation.
I know that I’m not alone when I tell you that over the last several years my wife has wanted us to buy a house, but due to my stubbornness we haven’t. It wasn’t always easy, when people would tell my wife what fools we were for not buying. While that seems to have subsided a good bit now, I can only imagine the friction that we’d be enduring now if I had given in and bought, only to watch our investment collapse.
I suspect that many of the people who did buy are now finding that finances can be a real sore point for couples. I’m sure in many cases, one of the couple wanted to buy real bad and the other thought it might not be the best. And even when both wanted to buy, seeing you extravagant lifestyle end because you can’t go on borrowing and spending is going to be tough, regardless of how wealthy or how middle class you are.
Now I know some of you HB’s (Heartless Bastards) are going to say, “XBox I don’t feel one bit sorry for these folks. They made their beds and they can sleep in ’em.” And while I understand your feelings, I still feel sorry for the mess that a lot of people have gotten themselves into. (Not sorry enough to want to bail them out mind you!)
But most importantly, I think of how I refused to go along with my wife’s house buying dreams in the years of serious bubbling, and how she stuck with me even though I frustrated the heck out of her. (To put it mildly!) And then I read about these people, and I realize how good I have it, and why of all the women I ever met, she’s the one I married.

ParticipantA new contestant! Ah yes, it looks like time for a round of Pain In La Jolla!
Today’s contestant bought in a nice area by UCSD in Dec. 2006 for a low price of $1,200,000. And now they’ve sold for a paltry $1,000,000. A 17% loss.
Actually, not that bad a loss in comparison to other parts of San Diego. But then again, I don’t expect the same level of distress in La Jolla as in other areas. But it definitely shows that the upper end is getting hit too.
