ParticipantI saw it and found it to be really moving. It makes a compelling case that the HMO’s havent got our best interests at heart. I think you should definately watch it, no matter what side of the fence you sit on. I have lived under social and private medicine systems (US and UK) and I know which one I prefer. The funny thing is I pay at least as much tax in the US as I did in the UK. The difference is that in the US at least 50% of that money is used for fighting wars, instead of keeping us all healthy.
There is going to be a lot of negative noise from industry shills and the ‘got mine, screw you’ crowd, but do yourself a favor and see it for yourself and make up your own mind.what_a_disasta
ParticipantAlso, don’t forget that buying as a collective has its own problems. People you love dearly have a way of getting on your nerves when you are forced into close proximity for extended periods. I imagine that problem will be compounded more by a remote location.
You should all agree on an exit plan just in case you cannot stand it after a few years. i.e. What will you do if one co-owner wants out, but the rest dont want to sell? If its all agreed beforehand you will avoid some big problems and ill feelings later on.

ParticipantI don’t think anyone who bought a house they couldn’t afford in 2003 is going to be happy with their decision in 2010
I don’t know about that. If you bought early enough in ’03 you are likely going to end up doing ok unless there is some dramatic turn of events.
It seemed to me like it was from mid ’03 until mid ’04 when the hysteria was in full effect. The paper gains owners got in that period constitute quite a cushion.

ParticipantYou are correct. Those places are so grim I must have totally blanked them out of my mind.

ParticipantHave you seen this site?
http://www.altosresearch.com/research/CA/CORONADO/552
You can view a number of interesting charts about many areas around the country.
I wonder if it could be something like this: Days on Market are way up, so people are obviously getting more choosy about houses they pick. If they are going to buy a really expensive home, it had better look and feel expensive too. So what few buyers there are, are in it for top quality homes that are worth more p/sqft than lesser quality ones.

ParticipantI am not a native myself. But as someone who has lived here 6 years or so, this comment from SD Lookup that sums it up for me.
I used to live in Carmel Valley and it’s a boring place. Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas on the Coast is fine but anything East of the 5 is boring for boring people with boring lives and cookie cutter mentality.
I really like the village atmosphere of the older coastal towns like Del Mar and Coronado, but the rest of the county is pretty much a cultural vacuum compared to other places I have lived. The trouble is you need to be doing very well for yourself to be able to relocate to a nice house in one of those desirable areas.

Participantffs. Nobody was saying 500k loss in Scripps Ranch. You are obviously being deliberately obtuse.

ParticipantIf you add 6% a year to homes that were bought in 1998 @ 300k they wouldn’t have reached today’s 700k levels till 2013. If prices drop 20% between now and 2009 then they will be just about in balance. That seems like quite a likely scenario.
