How much do you pay your housekeeper?

As a newly minted bachelor, I was wondering what people pay for house cleaning services. I had a woman clean my 3,500 sq. ft. home yesterday. She was highly recommended by my girlfriend and her mother and I figured my home needed a deep cleaning.

When I asked what she charged after the initial walk-through, she said, “I don’t know, you can decide after I finish”. OK. (?) I guess that is the protocol. So, she spends seven hours and does a great job. Alberta used some of my cleaners and some of her own. I supplied mops, brooms, vacuums, buckets, sponges and rags.

I am thinking a good hourly rate for unskilled labor is around $10 to $15 so seven hours at $15 is $105. She mentioned that some clients pay her $25 per hour (GF’s mom’s home is in Fairbanks Ranch). I wrote the check for $120 and she seemed OK with that.

So what do you pay? Do you pay by the project or hourly? Hire from a service (licensed and insured) or individual? Take out employment taxes? How often do they clean?

Bachelor with no kids? …shouldn’t be that bad….$70-80 every other week. Rotate tasks, windows bi/mo, cleaning blinds bi/mo, laundry/ironing….you get the idea.
