ParticipantWe had a pool in the backyard growing up. When all of us kids left for college my dad got tired of paying for chemicals and cleaning it. So he drained it and built a “kidney shaped” deck. He built some shelves in the deep end stored various camping gear/yard equipment.
That got old – so he got a permit to remove it about 8 years later. He hired some guys to punch the holes in the bottom. He also had the pumps & old gas heater removed and the gas line capped.
He had them chip away the coping and top foot of the concrete and toss it in the bottom. He had the concrete decking changed from kidney shaped to a large rectangle and that concrete was also tossed in the bottom. One of the big expenses is the fill dirt… He paid to have gravel put in. Then looked for fill dirt for free… and filled it in himself, one pickup load at a time. Finally – he got free soil and mulch from the Miramar landfill – layered that on top…
It’s now a nice area with flowers, fruit trees, and a veggie garden.
Even though my dad did the permit/inspection route – it still shows on the city/county records that we have a pool. We get lots of ads for pool equipment and zillow says we have a pool. I’m not sure how to correct that… it was taken out 20 years ago and I’ve owned the house less than 10 years.

ParticipantI’m curious how the high end is doing with loan mods.
Anecdotal – the house I’ve been following… bought in 2005 for 1.2M. NOD filed in Oct. 2009. NOT filed in Feb 2010. Put up for short sale in April 2010 – went contingent then pending pretty quickly.
But… the owner has couple of liens (tax and absentee judgment) so I assumed the short sale would not go through.
3 trustee sales postponed. Final one (end of June) shows the status as cancelled… so I assume the owner got a loan mod. But the NOT still shows (with no rescission.)
The outstanding debt was over $1M – so he didn’t qualify for HAMP based on loan size alone. Are banks offering loan mods to folks with that size loan? I guess they must be.

Any info on “10055 Winecrest Rd”? This is a REO. However, it seems to be on and off market 3 times. Normally REO sell quickly. This one is very fishy. I have seen the property. It is pretty bad. The guy ripped up all the appliances, jack-hammered the floor, broke the water pipe. I was think of giving a low ball offer but freaking out. Any suggestion?Date Event Price Appreciation Source

I couldn’t find any specific info on this property… the trustee sale info only goes back 7-15 days on the sites I check (fidelityasap.com, priorityposting.com, rppsales.com)The comments of the listing suggest it’s a REO or was purchased at trustee sale. “SELLERS ARE DISCLOSURE EXEMPT.”
But – it doesn’t show up on jpinpb’s NOD thread on sdlookup…

ParticipantAs a woman with a BSEE degree and graduate studies in software engineering I can speak to the male dominate field thing. The comment that the Megs and Carlys are busy shipping these well paying jobs offshore hits home. I’m not sure I’d tell my child to go into engineering.
I have a cousin (male) who had a degree in engineering – worked for Boeing for several years then went to work as a middle manager in one of the intel fabs in New Mexico. 10 years ago he chucked that career path and got his RN degree. He loves being a nurse. (And he’s not gay before anyone says that.)
As the mother of boys, I know there are gender differences in the way kids learn. As a woman who’s good at math – I know there are socialization issues in how we teach kids. I remember hearing “don’t worry about the math, sweetie, just make the work neat.” I also had countless (literally more than I can count) comments made about how I must have been pursing the EE degree as part of getting my M R S degree. That it was all a scam to meet a husband.
Things were different back in the 70’s. Did you know that in the early-mid 70’s a woman could not be a bartender here in CA? Exceptions were if she was the wife or daughter of the bar owner. Not excepted, if she, herself, owned the bar. It was a morality law – the idea being that bars were unsavory places for women to work. But they could work there as waitresses in skimpy dresses… Go figure. (The law was overturned when a widow who’d co-owned the bar could no longer bar tend when her husband died.)
And I agree with Walter/Scaredy… girls have cooties… I know because I have them.
