filling up pool with dirt

My wife and I don’t like below-ground backyard pools, because they are expensive to maintain, take up space that could otherwise be used for other things, and are a big liability. So houses with pools have been “deal breakers” for us when it comes to house hunting. But if the house is priced right, we could fill up the pool with dirt. Has anyone done this before? How much does it cost to fill up a typical backyard pool, and are there any tips/tricks/gotchas we should watch out for?
