ParticipantWell actually I find Canada is quite a bit different than USA but the point is taken.
Cashing out and moving out of state to a low cost region may be a good move for some but you better be sure because it is almost impossible to come back (me I plan on never leaving SoCal)
I would say the same for downsizing, you better be sure because you may never be able to move up again, especially once you retire (and moving from a SFH to a condo almost never works out well).
I will add this one note: I have never known anyone from SoCal who has moved out of state and was still happy about it a few years later (well maybe except the one guy who retired on Maui).

Participant

The only place where I found public transplantation cheaper than driving was in Asia, But that was likely because it was very heavily subsidized.
My prediction is that, in the future, high paying professional jobs won’t be in business parks surrounded by houses, but in dense urban city centres. As it is now, the top tier people want to be in top tier cities, which explains the cost of housing in those areas.
It was still a PITA carrying stuff and walking miles to get anywhere in Shanghai LOL.
I really don’t think that is in SoCal’s DNA,
I think SoCal will do what it has done for the last 100 years, (make outlying suburbs into big cities).
Just look at Carlsbad, even that is spilling over into Oceanside.

ParticipantI have to agree somewhat with bewildering, The only place where I found public transplantation cheaper than driving was in Asia, But that was likely because it was very heavily subsidized.
I hate being limited to what you can carry on the train, and waiting 30 minutes or more for the next train, then you end up walking half a mile to your destination.
PITA IMOI like personal vehicles.
Plus if it is very cold or hot or raining just adds to the misery of PT.
Self driving cars would help however, I still would want to own my own.

ParticipantI think SD will follow LA where most New Development and business/Jobs were moved to the outer burbs over the last 30 years.
There are actually very few businesses/Jobs downtown.

ParticipantOne day soon there will be a classroom where a bunch of computer science students are sitting down taking their final exam and on the test, will be a question.
“Why computers will never become smarter than humans and take over the world?”
Suddenly one of the students looking at that question jumps up and runs out of the classroom laughing hysterically.

ParticipantThere are definitely A-hole agents in RE so be careful that your agent is really representing you.
I had a listing agent that was way more interested in helping out one of his flipper buddies than representing our interests.
You can truly get into a nightmare situation very fast.
If possible always leave yourself an out.
Anyway IMO.

ParticipantWow that’s a lot of stuff to think about flu LOL.
In my simple mind I just narrow it down to are they building enough new homes to keep up with household formation. and are they building low or high end?
IMO it will take a few years yet to catch up to demand.

ParticipantIMHO just looking at the demographics (largest bulge in population about 26-28), I think it might be possible (unless war etc…) that we may not see another recession until 2020 maybe 2024.
Anyway IMHO.

ParticipantFinding meaning in your life is very important IMO.
Else you could be a very rich miserable SOB.
Family, hobbies ect.. can be meaningful but in general the idea is life is not for being happy, but for finding meaning and that may not be saving the world etc.. or even doing what others could not do in your place.
Anyway IMO.

Also, I’ll retire when I’m no longer employable. Fundamentally, I like to work and like what I do.
Yes grasshopper but how does one find his true meaning in life LOL.
My plan/goal is to never fully retire.The-Shoveler
ParticipantI don’t know 20% then eventually 50% (100% in some states) seem fairly big to me.

ParticipantIf we get into it with North Korea, ISIS and the middle east will be a small forgotten issue (which really it already is for us, But should be a MUCH MUCH bigger concern for Europe).
We just can not seem to get out of the biz of being Europe armed force, it should be Europe’s job not ours.
The-Shoveler
ParticipantIn most of Europe you cannot even order from a human at Mcdonald’s.
They just look at you annoyed and point to the order taking machine.
