ParticipantIf you don’t like the deal, go to a bank and borrow the same amount of the debt remaining and pay it off. If that doesn’t make sense because it is a higher interest rate or some other drawback, then deal with whatever the terms are. More than likely the terms are still better borrowing from the relative, term life insurance is cheap and banks don’t die so assigning a beneficiary if something were to happen to him is logical.
Remember the lesson learned, never borrow money from relatives or friends.

ParticipantThanks stockstradr, I’m kinda proud of it but truth be told I make up theories all the time, most are crap, this one seems to have legs. Most of my epiphanies occur while on the last few inches of a nice bottle of wine, so for the love of god, don’t base any actual life decisions on my ramblings. The search engine on this site has needs help, I couldn’t find the first time I posted it but if I had to guess it was before the dollar fell apart and I was in a bordeaux phase.

ParticipantOh my sweet dharmagirl, “Old Bones?” 1990’s tract homes are not quite craftsmans, keep from getting emotionally involved, the best advice you got from that realtor was that there will be others. If you get it, Great, if you don’t, it wasn’t meant to be and a better one awaits you. I can’t remember what year the place was built in from your posts back when you were shopping but anything built during the last down cycle 1993-1997 was built as cheap as they could build them, I was here and price was king, quality was a red headed stepchild. so be wary of those bones. Pre 1992 and I’ll give you a pass on the old bones assessment, after 1998 the environmentally friendly kicks in (vinyl windows, better insulation and finished garages) so your green side can feel good.

ParticipantTemekuT, good point, I only assumed that a piggy would never heloc over 100k of non aquisition debt, we are a collection of the most frugal financial throwbacks I know, which is why I like it here. Silly me, I’ll go sit in my corner now.
Now if you heloc’d 35k for a pool and 20k for your honda accord or used lexus, you’ll be fine, but don’t take the car out of the house on a 10 or 30 year loan, get a standard term auto loan and have a pre-subordinated lien dropped on the house, but with the car as the primary collateral (house is just for show) so you can get a 1099-int.
Rent your jet ski’s or find friend who has them, don’t drive lifted trucks, it screams small pen&*, and pay cash for travel, so endeth the lesson.
