ParticipantYou might think that, but the infrastructure in cities, especially the mass trasnit is a total waste as well. Almost every bus and rail costs more per passenger and carbon than solo drivers, it’s a myth. Even other countries with fantastic transit, let’s say the UK, loses 30-50% on every passenger.
Bridges to nowhere are a problem with politics, we should fix that, but freeways and paved roads kick the dogsnot out of any subway or buses, anywhere, because the users pay more than the cost, not so in any mass transit operation. In the US the taxpayers get an average of 20 cents back in fares on every dollar spent.
I’ll give you a pass brian, you are young, I had these questions and ideals in my youth too. It’s nice to see such intelligence without wisdom, it makes me think of simpler times.
It will happen, I’m sure of it, you are a smart guy. When you mix intelligence and an open mind, with time and experience, wisdom is usually the result.
Here’s a little sneak preview of how you will feel in 20 years. You’ll see the world, you’ll envy what they do right, you’ll get frustrated at why most americans are different and unappreciative of these international marvels of peace and harmony.
Then you’ll come full circle, you’ll realize, we are the frustrated Europeans, we got it right. Then some bad stuff will happen, maybe somewhere else or maybe here and you will see the difference. But for now, hate your government, hate the rural folks, or those that resist what you see as cosmopolitan. But if god forbid, we have a similar disaster that Japan is facing right now, that church going rural living old lady will be the first one to show up with pie and blankets, she’ll take strangers into her home and give them anything she has. My travels have caused me to meet these rural folks in some troubled times and while i don’t share all of their beliefs, I’ll be damned if i dont admire them and that i thank the stars that they exist, so they can have a bridge if that’s what makes them happy.

ParticipantResistance is futile. I’m not a fan boy, I’m not an engineer but I’m also not clueless, I’m a realist. The fact remains that apple products by and large function better, look better and hold their value better. I used to get pissed, I remember buying my accessories on e-bay direct from china (av cables, car dock fm modulator) and then when either I uprgaded software or phone version, sudenly the damn thing knew I bought a cheap knock off and refused to cooperate with it. There’s no reason to spend $50 on an apple a/v jack, but in the end, I succumbed. Because it’s about stuff working. I have a drawer full of old chargers adn phones and accesories that have no value, but my de-commissioned iphone 3g, even more than two years old, has value, all of the accesories still work on my iphone 4. My employer gives me a free smart phone of my choice but will not buy an iphone, usually, I just use my iphone after I’ve yelled at the other phone for a while, 90% of the planet thinks like me, that’s why there are lines.
I hate it like I hate car shopping (which I am still doing). I hate that german cars cost twice the money for parts, it makes no sense. I resist, I look at domestics, I talk myself into them at times, but i have yet to pull the trigger because somewhere between the ford or dodge dealer and my house, I’ll see a 6 series convertible or a porsche and think that i can have a used one of those instead, I’ll have more fun driving it, I’ll admire it, I’ll enjoy the unearned sexual attention of the opposite sex, I’m only gonna live one, why the hell am I resisting. Cause i tell myself I don’t need those things. But the detractors of my dream car are not found in my apple gear, cause my apple gear has the sexy of a 6 series with the reliability of an accord. It just costs a little more and it’s stats aren’t as good.
Case in point, I’m typing this on my very powerful PC, but if I move to my mac, I wouldn’t have the typos that i have, because my mac corrects everything I write and I never asked it to. Someone mentioned the iWoman or iDate, the analogy works, if apple were a girlfriend, she would always look good, she would always be ready to go, she would know more secrets than victoria and she would never complain.m She wouldn’t be inexpensive and there would be other models with more modifications and better statistics. But I wouldn’t care, as much as others told me there was something better, i wouldn’t believe them and if i did I still wouldn’t care, I’d write them off as being jealous or thinking about today, cause my gal will still be able to hold my attention years down the line.
Yeah, it’s creepy, fight it as long as you can, but I still maintain that if my house was on fire, the first non living things I’d try to save would be my iphone and my macbook pro. The rest is just crap.

ParticipantI have been slow, but I’ve come to Jesus as far as Apple goes. Just stop resisting, stop saying the the words “It’s just as good,” cause it isn’t. I bought a non ipod mp3 player years ago, trash, eventually got an ipod. I bought three non iphone smartphones, all trashed, iphone for life now. I’ve had half a dozen laptops, all gone, got a macbook pro last week, freaking love it. The three pc desktops in my house, their days are numbered, as they fail, they will be replaced by macs, and the ipad, it’s just matter of time, ill hold out as long as I can, I’ll use the other devices as long as I can, but I know at some point, I’ll have one of those too. My only complaint with apple is that they think of stuff I never needed and make me need it. How about they make stuff I already have to get and just make them better, more reliable, easier to use and beautiful. Three years ago I posted that they need to make an iCar, I’m still waiting. There are plenty of sucky products out there that the cupertino hippies could redesign and make everyone’s life better, here are just a few suggestions they could start with, there are plenty of things that need fixing before they make up another thing I never knew I needed. iCondoms, iTaxes, iTraffic, iBald, iCancer, iAztecsfinalfour, iBackpain, iFuel, iColdmedicine, the list could go on and on. C’mon apple, you can invent new stuff later, fix the stuff that sucks first!
But if I find out that they created Jimmer Fredette in their lab, I’m throwing all their stuff out too.

ParticipantIt totally depends on what is going on in my life. Are my kids in school, am I living alone, is there a woman in my life, if so, is she a voting member of the household, am I retired or am I working still, and where? Most importantly, what is my income, how am I getting by?
Del Mar, La Jolla if It’s just me or if it’s just me or me and wife/girlfriend. A mil isnt going to get me a big house for me and the kids and raising kids in that envoronment, I’d need a substatial income for them just to be average.
Mt. helix is good if the kids are youngish, good compromise.
Pt. Loma, if my kids were grown, to close to some places for me to raise kids there and schools can be subpar, but for me by myself, it works, can I walk to bars, thats a bonus.
Poway or San Digueto districts if I had young kids.
But if my life was what it is today (high schoolers happy with their life and friends, still another 7-10 years of work left, I’d take the mil, buy a house like scardey’s house, invest the other 4-5 hundred K in something that produces income (3-5 rentals up here, generate 4-5k net per month for travel/slush fund) and stay in hotels when I had the urge to be be around lots of people. In fact I could travel somewhere cool every other month and still have plenty of change.
Final answer, I wouldn’t spend a million dollars on a house unless it was just a small fraction of my wealth. Too many other things to do with money than putting it all into a house. It proably explains why I am who I am and why I live where I live. I’ve always admired the Buffet way of thinking. I’ve designed my portfolio to ultimately have in excess of 10k a month, inflation adjusted income, in retirement for the remainder of my stay on the planet. Yet I live in a house worth 300k, have no toys (exotic cars, motorhomes or boats) and I’ve never had to tell a cigar or bottle of wine or a restaraunt, that I can’t afford you. Enjoy the little things, ignore the big things and for god’s sake, buy a house that you can afford on less than one third of your income, it’s just a house.
