That was an interesting read. Regardless of what happens, at least it is giving Lewis Black some good material

ParticipantCount me in that 1/2 and I have no interest in the stuff. What I am interested in is getting some other sins to share the tax burden. Everytime I read the news, they are introducing some new alcohol or tobacco tax. Cigar tax almost exceeds the cigar cost, there is a bill looking to increase the tax to 135%. I don’t smoke cigarettes (unless drunk and in a casino, when in rome…) but those folks pay a total of $2.90 in tax per pack, I think they are about $5, so there’s more tax than cost. If they legalize pot, they will have a new whipping boy, throw in legalized prostitution and me and my wine and cigars can be forgotten for a few years by all the people for a perfect world.

ParticipantThank you rt.66, that was so nice it’s almost cause for suspicion since it wasn’t that great of a post, but I’ll take it at face value and compliment you on your growth and role on the boards, from our early days of occasionally scuffling, you’ve become one of the posters who’s perspective always interests me.
Aecitia, you know that if you remove the partisanship from this, it has it’s merits, I think even a republican president would entertain the idea of national health care these days. Just think how good it would be for large corporations, the legacy costs of large corporations that provide health care and reitree health care is something that is seriously hurting the bottom line right now and the cost keeps outpacing inflation, at some point you have to look around and see how everyone else does it. Let’s at least see their plan, I wont put my faith blindly in our lawmakers, they have a knack for screwing things up, even the easy things. I have decided it’s not woth worrying about and I am open to the concept of it. I have too much to worry about with Lamar Odom still not signed by the lakers.

ParticipantI quit worrying about this a few years back, I used to be opposed to it but now I figure that every other 1st world country has some form of it and it works at least somewhat, so what am I afraid of. Our poorest get free health care, our lower-middle seem to get the shaft, it seems out of whack a little. Every time I go to a hospital, there is no shortage of people of questionable citizenship or trailer folks, so how much different could free health care be.
No matter what direction we go as a nation, status quo, fully nationalized or somewhere in the middle, decisions will have to be made. Not everyone will get everything, some people will die, someone or some board will have to make the decisions, like they do now. Most European countries cut back on lifesaving expenses at about age 75 and just concentrate on comfort, we tend to spend a great deal of money on people that won’t get better or are gonna die soon anyway. I shouldn;t say this because I’m no spring chicken, but if the difference between 78 and 78.5 years of age is going to set the rest of you back a few hundred grand, just give me some morphine, kiss me goodbye and tell me I’ll be missed. Most of the UK and Canadian health stories about waiting and dying are anectdotal and rare. It works and people are happy with it in every other industrialized country, so I’m no longer afraid of it.
I would prefer to avoid copying the UK’s dental plan if at all possible, yikes!!
