svelteParticipantI remember my first visit to Mesa Verde about 20 years ago.
There was a large display that analyzed the tree rings from north American trees going back many hundred years.
What they could tell from those rings was that historically speaking, the 1900s were significantly wetter than prior centuries. The write-ups predicted that there would be less moisture in NA going forward to return to a more normal North American pattern.
Well looks like they are right…but many folks want to blame that on man. History shows it probably would have happened with or without man.
What infuriates me about the Global Warming articles is that they always seem to equate “Global Warming” to “human-caused temperature change”, and they are not the same thing. The globe can get warmer in spots without it being the fault of man.
svelteParticipant
If this were an actual issue day to day for men hobby lobby would’ve been decided differently…
Oh, Hobby Lobby covers vasectomy!!!
That speaks volumes, doesn’t it?
svelteParticipantI have a few theories on this, not sure which is correct.
First, it seems to me the press has not attributed this at all to Obama’s move to not deport illegal immigrant children in the US. They are saying it is due to increased Central American violence. I have no idea which is true (maybe a combination?), but is seems too much of a coincidence that the policy change that happened just prior to the border surge had no effect.
Now, was this an unexpected consequence that Obama had not considered, or an ultra-sly attempt to start a confrontation to ensure Hispanics turn out en massed to vote Democratic in the 2014 elections?
I am leaning towards the ultra-sly theory myself. And the Murrieta protestors are playing right into his hands….right smack into Obama’s plan…
Witness the other side that came out to counterprotest.
And I agree with scaredy. The original protesters showed enormous lack of class. Sometimes we forget that we are a nation of immigrants.
And before anyone stands on the “but they are illegal” dogma, well I would be more sympathetic to that argument if Boehner would let immigration reform come up for a vote. But by blocking reform, all goodwill I have for the “illegal” argument evaporates.
svelteParticipant
Seems like the market is on a roar again. YTD, S&P is up 8.4%, DOW is up 3.8% and NASDAQ is up 8.6%. How’s everyone doing with their 401k? Are you guys/gals beating the index YTD?
Do you guys/gals think the 2nd half will continue the same trajectory as the 1st half?
I’m up 7.73%
Slow and steady, baby. Slow and steady.
svelteParticipantIt’s hard for me to feel sorry for a couple who hires a homeless woman off Craigslist to watch their most valuable possession – their children.
svelteParticipant
Maybe my workplace was unusual… My former coworkers are mostly homeowners – some with rental homes… prop 13, mello roos, tax policy of all kinds were discussed openly and in an engaged manner.
I note the lack of sex, politics, religion, and dislike of children on that list. 🙂

svelteParticipantAgree with xbox, walking the neighborhood will give your message much more weight. Emails come across as minimal effort and dedication to your cause. I know from experience on both sides.
Side note: it sounds as if your board acted without consulting HOA lawyers, as legal should have noted the limitation straight away (it is a common limitation). If they did consult legal before they set the $500, then your HOA should probably look for new legal representation. If the board didn’t consult first, that is a sign of a board that shoots from the hip.

I agree that prop 13 is semi taboo – but we seem to be able to discuss it here… (See my conversations with BG and CAR for examples.)
We can discuss things openly here because we are anonymous.
Try discussing some of the topics in this thread in a random gathering of people. Totally different reaction from folks.
To my way of thinking, that may be the greatest thing about the internet…free and open discussions free from identity…
svelteParticipantOops. Forgot the rule someone on here taught me. “Don’t engage the crazies.”
My mistake. Stealth mode back on.
svelteParticipantShe actually ripped his yellow vest off on the left side. This wasn’t just a grabbing for his name tag.
Law enforcement has to be respected – that’s the only way a free society will work. This lady stepped over the bounds and he rightfully took action. He wasn’t overly rough on her. And I bet she’ll never grab an officer’s clothing again.
Police are given extra protection under the law because of their position. I agree with that. In return, they are held to higher standards. I agree with that too.
He had to draw the line somewhere and if I were in his shoes and someone ripped my vest, I would probably have done the same thing. The woman had already shown her propensity to get physical with the officer.
svelteParticipantConcur with others on the board.
We gave up everything not kid related for like 15 years. Not a conscience decision, there was simply no time! We had to rediscover hobbies once they had their own drivers licenses.
There wasn’t even any alcohol in the house during that period…for two reasons basically…(1) no time to drink it…(2) even if we miraculously found time when they were sleeping at night, we needed to have a clear mind at all times in case a problem arose while they slept.
We also found that when they were asleep, that was our time to take care of the backlog of chores we had no time for while they were awake.
Kids sound limiting and time consuming and they are. But they bring so much joy that we didn’t ever wish for the pre-kid days…we just enjoyed them while we had them…
svelteParticipantI too have noticed that expressing any sort of displeasure about the military is absolutely taboo.
The flag too, but less so.
Other things, in order of decreasing resistance:
– Disliking kids (not that I dislike them, but have friends who don’t care for them and they feel ostracized to even mention it)
– Supporting population growth limits (funny how the thing that could do the most to protect our environment going forward is never mentioned!!)
– Questioning crosses or religious displays on public property
– Thinking the govt bailouts were a good thing…probably forgetting a few…
svelteParticipantScrewing on the couch.
svelteParticipant
I hate to quote Family Guy, but this is one of my favorite lines from when the family visits Ground Zero:
Peter: Ground Zero. So this is where the first guy got AIDS.
Brian: No, Peter, this is the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks!
Peter: Oh, so Saddam Hussein did this?
Brian: No.
Peter: The Iraqi army?
Brian: No.
Peter: Some guys from Iraq?
Brian: No.
Peter: That one lady who visited Iraq that one time?
Brian: No, Peter, Iraq had nothing to do with this. It was a bunch of Saudi Arabians, Lebanese, and Egyptians financed by a Saudi Arabian guy living in Afghanistan and sheltered by Pakistanis.
Peter: So…you’re saying we need to invade Iran?
That is absolutely awesome doofrat!
