ParticipantAnd some kid shoots off fireworks and gets blown up by drones?

ParticipantSix-shooter in a hip holster vs some nutter with a machine gun. Really likely.
We’d also need to normalize bulletproof leisure suits, night vision goggles (you could incorporate them into a Google-Glass type appliance), and flak fedoras for the Good Guys with Guns(tm) to win…
But hey, the US fashion industry could make a killing off of this.

ParticipantI’d prefer not to have economies of scale and innovation in invading my privacy. Better to not make military weapons easily available, so there’s less need for security and invasion of privacy.

ParticipantAre private owners taking matters into their own hands really better? Do you really want hotel staff rooting and pawing through your bags (or x-raying them) whenever you check into a hotel? How about body scanners or magnetometer gates like in an airport? Every. Bloody. Time. You go out for a drink or a show, come back and have to stand in line and deal with that nonsense?
How would that even work in smaller hotels or motels with multiple entrances? What about landlords? If you rent a condo in a high-rise, should you be subject to a search whenever you walk into your own home with grocery bags?
That would end up basically being a privately-run police state. Or we could just make it more difficult for nutters to buy powerful weapons.
Plenty of states make getting a license a PiTA, and their laws pass the 2A test. No need to change the Constitution, just pass stricter licensing laws for the more powerful weapons.

ParticipantIt’s happening in the US, not just abroad…

ParticipantMy next place will be uptown (Wash Heights) where they care much less about clothing lines in the back alley. Natural dryers > mechanical ones.

ParticipantSummit appliance is actually a US brand. We had a Summit stove from the early 80s in our apartment.
US-brand (GE, etc) 20″ and 24″ stoves aren’t actually all that uncommon. Nor are 18″ dishwashers.
2-burner cooktops are silly. A basic meal almost requires three burners. I made fish with rice + sauce the other day. One burner for the sauce pan. Another for the rice pot. A third for string beans on the side.
Plus 2-burner units don’t have an oven underneath — where’s the broiler to make the fish?

Participant(1) More demand in urban areas that don’t renovate as often and use smaller (cheaper) appliances.
(2) Digital controls last longer than mechanical timers. Less demand for new appliances since old ones last longer.
(3) Digital controls are actually cheaper than the rotary timers popular in the 80s and 90s.September 30, 2017 at 12:43 PM in reply to: Cutting The Cord– Considering Switching to Sling TV #808024spdrun
ParticipantIf you cheap-asses want to save a few bucks spending hours searching for how to can get free shit, be my guest.
Considering I watch less than an hour a day of TV, I don’t spend “hours.” I do have a Netflix sub, but it’s not $20/mo, not even $10.
BTW – if one wants to go that way, entering a title into the Pirate Bay is as easy as searching on Netflix.

ParticipantStates like NY, NJ, and CA already pay more to DC than they get back in subsidies. What cutting deductions for state tax will do is hurt middle-class taxpayers in those states. They’d have to pay even more to DC while not benefiting from Federal spending in their states.

ParticipantMaybe biohazard what with the Hep A issue in San Diego?
spdrun
ParticipantYeah, the bracket thing is silly considering you mostly look up from a table or pick the top rate than add a %.
spdrun
ParticipantWe’ll double(*) the standard deduction.
(*) – Restrictions apply, personal exemption going away. Double is redefined as 15% more.
Yeah, not good that people in states that already pay more to DC than they get back will pay EVEN more. Maybe corp and passthrough tax will offset that, maybe not.
I see a lot of “double” speak.

ParticipantRoku is silly. Most of the “free” content is available for free via HDTV and an antenna. The paid content is available for less elsewhere.
