ParticipantWonder who was texting or yapping and not driving? Sorry for you — this may help:
And hey, in the future, maybe GoogleCars will follow at a respectable distance, though they’ll come with problems of their own no doubt.

ParticipantWell, in SD many of the “happening” areas seem to coincide with the beach areas. And they’re also year-around. Ever been to a Northeastern beach town out of season?
But if inland suburbs are more expensive, that’s strange. As BG would put it, people are paying a premium to live in “lizard-land.”

Participant~$200 billion bailout? Not enough. Another temporary solution, thankfully. Hope this will fester for another year or five, and keep people on our side of the pond niiiice and jittery.
The other good thing is that faith has been lost in the ability of the Euro-peons to fix their “crises.” Euro “only” went up about 2%, whereas if the news were announced a year ago, it would have jumped 5%.

ParticipantCompared to NYC, Boston or even Hell Ay, you get a LOT for your money in SD. At least if you’re talking about housing in nice, walkable locations.
In NYC, $400k gets you (common charges include property taxes)…

ParticipantI agree with all of this. But usually I have a loaded trunk, kid and/or dog with me in the 100+ deg heat and reservations to spend the night somewhere in NM or El Paso. Both are long drives from SD.
Generally, it helps the louts’ attitude if they know that their interactions are being recorded AND streamed to the cloud via a 3G connection. i.e. smashing or confiscating the camera phone won’t help at all.

ParticipantThe problems I have with the law are as follows:
(a) too complex. Public coverage for everyone, with the right to purchase additional private coverage would have much simpler.
(b) it doesn’t necessarily cover the very poor. Medicaid eligibility is raised to 133% of the poverty line, but states aren’t actually required to implement that provision.spdrun
ParticipantYou’re neglecting the effects of immigration and legalization of immigrants. Plenty of younger people clamoring to enter the US.
Oh yeah, and plenty of boomers AS WELL AS Xers used their homes as cash machines, and spent the money like drunken sailors, rather than re-investing it. Purchase price doesn’t matter as much as current debt to asset ratio.

Participant^^^
Good to hear. The longer housing prices stay sane, the better, so that Gen Y can get a leg up on the X’er and boomer idiots who are underwater. Must be nice renting from someone 25 years younger who owns 3 properties of the kind that you paid through the nose for.

ParticipantThis didn’t have to do with a ticket or money. This had to do with my rights, and I remained calm while refusing to answer. It’s pretty sad how many Americans willingly accept the “they’re keeping us safe”/”they’re just doing their jobs” excuse when faced with increased restrictions. Lastly, if the border was properly policed, the interior checkpoints wouldn’t be needed.
PS – I heard about the video you posted. Apparently totally fake. The cop had a reputation for being an ass, and he staged it with a friend on his car’s camera to “prove” “how nice a guy” he was to his superiors, who were planning to fire his sorry butt.

DRIVING is a privilege. If they establish (via dog perhaps) that I’m not carrying any contraband, and my driver’s license is valid, they can’t detain me until I’ve given them a complete “flight plan” and my life’s story.
That would be like a cop pulling me over for no reason at all: “where are you going? how long are you staying there? what is the address that you’re staying over the weekend? are you planning to speed tomorrow? have you run any red lights today?”
Not that I’m worried, but giving my itinerary to a stranger is actually borderline dangerous. They had the address on my license. Do I really want a stranger who knows my address to also know how long my apartment might be vacant?
This is the US, not a police state where I have to justify my actions to some power-hungry swine in a uniform.

ParticipantIf I’m taking a trip in my own country, I shouldn’t have to justify this trip to a government official or give him my itenarary (which was flexible anyway since I was going by car, and that particular trip was mainly to see friends, go camping, and sightsee). Being a d–k? Sorry no. I was perfectly polite. I just chose not to answer questions that were none of his business.
If they wanted to look for drugs and/or people, they were welcome to walk a dog around the car. Did they really expect me to say: “I’m in California for a day to pick up 20 kg of heroin and bring it to Phoenix?”
Blindly obedient cop-huggers are why this country is going downhill.

ParticipantThat’s another problem. Because then when you go off somewhere and rent a car, you get gouged by paying for car rental supplemental collision insurance. You can’t waive it if you don’t have collision coverage on any of your cars.
Wrong-o.
I have liability only on my car (covers rentals as well) and I always waive supplemental collision. Credit card has collision damage coverage, and actually REQUIRES you to waive the rental company’s insurance.
BTW – not a single rental company has actually ever checked what coverage I have on my personal vehicle. Insurance companies are run by pigs and crooks. No way I’m paying a single cent more to them than I’m required to to protect myself from lawsuits. I’ve never paid more than a few thousand for a car, so cars can be replaced.
Last time, I had a car totaled, I simply went after the insurance of the teenage bint who was yappin’ on her cell phone and not paying attention to traffic lights. Or rather her daddy’s insurance. They ponied up for book value + rental reimbursement + 14 add’l days of rental within a few days. Book value, incidentally, was 2x what I had actually paid for the car! I told them that: they insisted in paying.
They took $250 off for scrap value, let me keep the car, and I sold it on Craigslist to someone who wanted to make a track car.
Guess they knew they couldn’t have won in court, and wanted to cut their losses.

ParticipantDon’t carry anything other than liability (to $500k) and medical. Problem solved. “Book value” may be low, but the devil you know is often better than the devil you don’t know.
I’m not big on safety — my ideal newer car would be a Tesla Roadster, Lotus Elise, or Fiat 500.

ParticipantIf you’re comparing the current assclowns in power and their minions to Moses, G-d might smite you for your impudence 🙂
And sometimes, if you take footage/audio of authority violating the law and publicize it, they may end up being swallowed up by the earth. Or at least getting fired without pension.
