Participant^^^
Why not agree to it? Defense contractors, Wall Street firms, law enforcement contractors, and other social parasites take handouts from the government without qualms. Why shouldn’t the little guy maximize their handouts?

ParticipantThey’re making money off of either margin fees or not giving the most favorable buy/sell prices. Possibly both. I’d honestly rather pay a commission and get the most favorable prices than have the fees be hidden and non-transparent.

ParticipantFIH – it’s better for Mother Gaia to own quality clothes that last years, not throw stuff that falls apart after a year away.

ParticipantFIH’s discussion is way too facile, but I will say this — there’s actually more support than you’d imagine for Trump among Cubans and Dominicans. He appeals to religious/Catholic/conservative types (especially older people), even though he’s a complete hypocrite and any semblance of religiosity is a show. There’s also a long tradition of colorism (racism with finer gradations) in Latin American countries, and he pushes that button for some people.
Remember, abortion bad, but separating nursing infants from their mothers, good.
As far as Asians, some people in China embrace American goods — Buicks sell like hotcakes in China and are considered a luxury status symbol. Same with Nike shoes.

Participant^^^ I thought you were a perma-bull on housing, The-Shoveler. What changed? Personally, “a lot of condos up for sale” sounds good — the allowed 7% rent increase is hardly a dealbreaker.

ParticipantSay this law is upheld in court. What’s to stop an app-hail company from CHARGING car owners a commission to match them with rides, with the final payment being handled between the car owner and customer (either via Square, Google/Apple Pay, or by good, old-fashioned cash)? At that point, the app-hail company would be operating as a true service, not as anything resembling an employer.

ParticipantSome of us attended state schools on the East Coast and liked it just fine. You won’t be attending the school, the kid will be. Private schools are overrated.
Also, AGI can be adjusted below $120k for a few years to meet “standards” — if you have paid off homes, take a pay cut. The rich play the subsidy game, why not the middle class?

ParticipantWhy should you invest if you can get a government to give it for free? State university in a state that offers a full ride under an income threshold, make sure your income is below the threshold. If they have to work for a year to establish residency, so be it.

ParticipantHave your kid move to NY or any other state that offers free 4-yr college a year before matriculation. They can work in a cheap area of the state for a year, then go to SUNY or CUNY for virtually free, especially if your income is under $120000 for those years.

ParticipantThe solution is to reduce the barriers/costs of hiring by socializing things like healthcare and unemployment insurance. If companies paid a known % tax rate per employee and the state took care of things like insurance, then a lot of paperwork and red tape for hiring would go away.

ParticipantYAY and GOOD RIDDANCE!
Screw Uber — let’s go back to private taxis that accept good ‘ol ANONYMOUS cash and don’t tie rides to an identity and social credit rating. Bye, Felicia!
Also, this is just an excuse for Goober to downsize — they’re firing management left and right and bleeding VC cash … looks like the casino is calling in its bets. Pets.com, here we come!

ParticipantIt’s actually cheaper in some ways if you’re lower-middle-class … higher income taxes, but much lower property tax. Transit for $2.75 per ride is also a nice perk — you can get away with one “beater” car if any. The trick is to live like a recent immigrant family and lower your expectations (I have none).
Also, better social welfare programs. Free pre-K, high limits for CHIP, eligibility for $50/mo insurance up to $100k/yr income for a family of four. Defense contractors and big corporations take welfare, no reason why the little guy or girl shouldn’t as well.
And free college for the kids up to $120k/yr family income is another decent perk.

ParticipantThe Shoveler — kids in NYC (generally the outer boroughs, but not the suburbs) actually have more opportunities than suburban kids. Get into a decent high-school and they have co-op programs where they can help do research at local universities like CUNY and Rockefeller.

ParticipantJust get a Moto E5 Play — removable battery (as Allah intended to have electronic devices to have), SD card for cloudfree usage, headphone jack, not some airy-fairy converter or Bluetooth junk.
